LINEAR PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENT 1

1. The Reader produces two types of products—Product Awesome and Product Ultra. Product Ultra is a better grade
of silk fabric and, as such, requires 7.5 kilos of raw silk per meter, whereas Product Awesome requires 5 kilos of
raw silk per meters. A meter of Product Ultra requires 3.2 hours of processing time; a meter of Product Awesome
requires 3.0 hours. Although the demand for Product Awesome is practically unlimited, the maximum demand for
Product Ultra is 510 meters per month. The manufacturer has 6,500 kilos of silk and 3,000 hours of processing time
available each month. The manufacturer makes a profit of Php2.25 per meter of Product Awesome and Php3.10 per
meter of Product Ultra. The manufacturer wants to know how many meters of each type of cloth to produce to
maximize profit. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.

2. Schindler’s List owns 410 hectares of farmland in Cagayan de Oro on which they grow pechay and camote. Each
hectare of pechay costs Php105 to plant, cultivate, and harvest; each hectare of camote costs Php210. Schindler’s
List has a budget of Php52,500 for next year. The government limits the number of hectares of camote that can be
planted to 100. The profit from each hectare of pechay is Php300; the profit from each hectare of camote is Php520.
Schindler’s List wants to know how many hectares of each crop to plant in order to maximize their profit. Formulate
a linear programming model for this problem.

3. Pulse Asia has been tasked to do a survey following the national elections in the Philippines.. The firm must
assign interviewers to conduct the survey by cellphone or in person. One person can conduct 80 cellphone
interviews or 40 personal interviews in a single day. The following criteria have been established by the firm to
ensure a representative survey:

_ At least 3,000 interviews must be conducted.

_ At least 1,000 interviews must be by cellphone.
_ At least 800 interviews must be personal.

An interviewer conducts only one type of interview each day. The cost is Php50 per day for a cellphone interviewer
and Php70 per day for a personal interviewer. The firm wants to know the minimum number of interviewers to hire
in order to minimize the total cost of the survey. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.

4. The All-American Rejects manufactures an awesome mixture for a specific client in 1,000-kilo batches. The
mixture contains three ingredients—gold, silver, and platinum. The mixture must conform to formula specifications
that are supplied by the customer. The company wants to know the amount of each ingredient it needs to put in the
mixture that will meet all the requirements of the mix and minimize total cost. The customer has supplied the
following formula specifications for each batch of mixture:

_ The mixture must contain at least 200 kilos of silver.

_ The mixture must contain at least 300 kilos of gold.
_ The mixture must contain at least 100 kilos of platinum.

The cost per kilo of silver is Php400; the cost per kilo of gold, Php180; and the cost per kilo of platinum, Php90.
Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.

5. Roger My Cat Stores imports chuy-looking clothes it sells from suppliers in Cogon Market and Carmen Market.
Roger My Cat estimates that it will have 45 orders in a year, and it must arrange to transport orders (in less-than-full
containers) by container ship with shippers in Cogon and Carmen. The shippers Roger My Cat uses have a travel
time of 32 days from Carmen and 14 days from Cogon, and Roger My Cat wants its orders to have an average travel
time of no more than 21 days. About 10% of the annual orders from the shipper in Cogon are damaged, and the
shipper in Carmen damages about 4% of all orders annually. Roger My Cat wants to receive no more than 6
damaged orders each year. Roger My Cat does not want to be dependent on suppliers from just one location, so it
wants to receive at least 25% of its orders from each location. It costs Php3,700 per order from Cogon Market and
Php5,100 per order to ship from Carmen Market. Roger My Cat wants to know how many orders it should ship from
each location in order to minimize shipping costs. Formulate a linear programming model for this problem.
