What is Contemporary World?
The circumstances and
ideas of the present age
(present times)
Why do we need to study it?

● allows one to make more sense of the current world

For example:
One can understand the importance of the social welfare progress if
we look at the Great Depression and New Deal.
Great Depression
New Deal
GLOBALIZATION

What is it?
the process of interaction and
integration among people,
companies, and governments
worldwide.
GLOBALIZATION IS NOT A NEW PHENOMENON.

➢ The world economy has become increasingly

interdependent for a long time.
the process of globalization has accelerated; this is due to a variety of factors, but
important ones include

● improved trade
● increased labour and capital mobility
● improved technology.
Contemporary Globalization

the final wave of globalization, and is characterized by the

acceleration and intensification of the technological,
cultural, religious, economic and political integration

(Gerle 2000).
Contemporary Globalization
Elaborated definition.

Force or process that involves the Increasing interconnectedness of

entire world and results in making different parts of the world through
something world-wide in scope common processes of economic,
environmental, political, and cultural
change.
Global connections today differ in four ways from past:
(1) Function at much greater speed

(2) Operates on a much larger scale

(3) The scope of global connections is much broader and has

multiple dimensions

(4) Interactions and interdependencies among numerous global

actors have created a new level of complexity for the relationships
between places and regions
Modern Technology

has created quick movement

of money, materials, products,
technology and other
economic assets
Globalization has had both positive and negative
repercussions
LOCALIZATION
- places might be attractive because of resources, or it might be suitable for new factories, extract
materials, sell them, etc.

HEIGHTENED ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES

- example, factories closing in the United States and open in Mexico due to cheaper labor.

SPECIALIZATION ON LOCAL LEVEL

- Each place plays a distinctive role based on its local assets

History isn’t important because it’s
deemed to be repeated but to understand
where we go into the future and to
understand what’s needed, one needs to
have a foundation of the past. Decisions
we make for the present are because of
our past

Economic Globalization
refers to the increasing interdependence of world economies as a
result of the growing scale of cross-border trade of commodities
and services, flow of international capital and wide and rapid
spread of technologies.
When you buy a Toyota car, its parts have probably been produced in
several different countries. Toyota is one of hundreds of companies with
globalized operations.
Commodity Chains

a process used by firms to gather resources,

transform them into goods or commodities, and
finally, distribute them to consumers. It is a series
of links connecting the many places of production
and distribution and resulting in a commodity that
is then exchanged on the world market.
● assess particular asset of a place and correctly identify the
optimal location for each activity
○ extract raw materials
○ Produce parts
○ Manage operations
○ Develop engineering systems
Historically people had difficulty
moving $ and goods from one
country to another, modern
technology has changed that
Transnational Corporations

● conduct research, operates factories, and sells products in

many countries, not just where it’s headquarters are located.
Cultural Globalization
What is Culture?

Culture is the characteristics of a

particular group of people, defined by
everything from language, religion,
cuisine, social habits, music and arts.
refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and values
around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify
social relations.
➢ This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures
that have been diffused by the Internet, popular culture media, and
international travel.
Positive Negative

Globalization has made us more ● Cola-Colinization

conscious and tolerant of other's
● Cultural imperialism
lifestyles and beliefs.
● Country's’ traditional foods lost
to big fast food chains
● Traditional clothing lost to big
clothing brands
Political Globalization
➢ is linked to the growing
importance of international
organization

As countries become more economically and technologically

interdependent, there is pressure to adopt uniform policies.
➢ One of the key aspects of the political
globalization is the declining importance of the
nation-state and the rise of other actors on the
political scene.
