EXPERIMENT 8 :
INTERSECTION VOLUME STUDY
LABORATORY PRACTICAL

OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of traffic flow in an intersection area for 4-leg junction or T-junctions

THEORY: Traffic volume studies are conducted to determine the number,

movements, and classifications of roadway vehicles at a given location. These
data can help identify critical flow time periods, determine the influence of large
vehicles or pedestrians on vehicular traffic flow, or document traffic volume trends.
The length of the sampling period depends on the type of count being taken and
the intended use of the data recorded. For example, an intersection count may be
conducted during the peak flow period. If so, manual count with
5, 10- or 15-minute intervals could be used to obtain the traffic volume data. Two
methods are available for conducting traffic volume counts known as Manual
Count and Automatic Count

EQUIPMENTS:
(Please write/paste picture or label the equipment used)

i. Stationery
ii. Paper data
iii. Counter
iv. Stop watch
v. Safety vest

PROCEDURES:
i. Select an intersection with traffic light at along Persiaran Sultan Abu Bakar
(UIA, Indera Mahkota 8, Taman Bandar and Bukit Istana)
ii. Identify the number of traffic light phases and sketch the traffic movement
iii. Determine the rate of traffic flow at the selected area. Take note of the number
of vehicles based on the vehicle classes and road types via Persiaran
Sultan Abu Bakar in every 5 minutes intervals.
iv. Record the traffic counts measurements in intersection volume study data
form.
v. Do the observation for 1 hour.
vi. Convert the vehicles count data into PCU (refer to Table 4.1 Conversion to
PCU at Intersection, Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 13/87) in every 5 minutes
intervals.
RESULT:
(Paste the result from the simulator)

CONCLUSION:

CLEANELINESS AND NEATNESS:

1. Explain ALL equipment that need to be cleaned and how to kept in place.
All equipment that has been used should be cleaned and placed in the correct
place before leaving the laboratory
