2ND TRIMESTER SCIENCE STUDY GUIDE

by: Laura Gonzalez 8C

1. Name three differences between Aerobic and

Anaerobic Respiration?

Aerobic respiration:
- needs oxygen
- the final product is carbon dioxide
- realses more energy than anaerobic respiration

Anaerobic respiration:

- doesn’t need oxygen

- the final product is alcohol
- realses less energy than aerobic respiration
2. Write details on the lines provided about the three
different microorganisms listed below.

Virus details:
- they infect all live forms
- when they infect something the host cell produce
thousands of copys
- viruses spread in many ways

Bacteria details:
- bacteria were among the first live form to appear in
the earth
- some animals depend of bacteria to survive
- they are prokaryotic organisms

Protists details:
- protists are a diverse collection of organisms
- they are unicellular organisms
- They can be parasites
3. Bacteria is in 3 shapes:
- coccus
- rod or bacillus
- spiral

4. What type of bacteria causes infections?

- Streptococcus
- Staphylococcus
- E. coli

5. Match the words in Column I with the phrases in

Column II. Write the letter of the correct phrase in the
blank on the left.

1-f
2-c
3-d
4-a
6-b
6. What are some of the ways that people can reduce
their use of fossil fuels?
- Buy food that is locally produced
- Install solar panels on your roof at home so you can
generate more renewable energy instead of relying
entirely on oil, gas etc.
- avoid buying processed foods
- Before you turn on the ignition, ask yourself if you
really need to take the car.

7. How can planting vegetation help reduce global

warming?
- Tree planting is one of the simplest and most
effective ways of tackling climate change caused by
greenhouse gas. As trees grow they absorb carbon
dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas in the
atmosphere
8. What are examples of reasons why forests are
being cleared in different parts of the world?
- Expansion of infrastructure
- To generate more highly prized consumer products
- Tourism
- Charcoal production
- Mining

9. Name at least two greenhouse gases:

- Carbon Dioxide
- Nitrous Oxide

10. Why did the Black Death spread so easily?

- Infection spread easily because the rats were drawn
to human activity, especially the food supplies kept in
barns, mills, and homes
11. The Black Death was transmitted to humans in
two ways. Explain both of those ways.
- rather than bubonic plague, which is transmitted to
humans through bites from infected rat fleas (and
then can be transmitted between humans, according
to some research)
- direct contact with infected tissues, and inhalation
of infected respiratory droplets
Questions:
1.Which is the correct equation for aerobic
respiration in humans?
A. Glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water

2. Which is the correct equation for anaerobic

respiration in humans?
C. Glucose → lactic acid

3. Which of these is a difference between aerobic

and anaerobic respiration in humans
D. None of the above

4. A student makes a claim that certain bacteria are

always harmful to humans. Which example can the
student use to support this claim?
C. Streptococcus pyogenes destroys red blood cells
and causes illness when it enters the body
5. The type of protist that moves and gathers food
with pseudopods is called a(n) ___
B. Amoeba

6. Which shape does NOT describe the shape of

bacteria cells?
A. Sphere

7. A long, whip-like structure that helps a cell to

move is called a ___
B. Flagellum

8. A bacteria is what type of organism?

A. Prokaryote

9. What causes acid rain?

A. High concentrations of sulfuric or nitric acid from
pollution
10. Acid rain can damage…
D. All options are correct

11. ____________________ are pollutants released

into the air.
C. Hazardous wastes

12. The ____________________ protects people

from the effects of too much ultraviolet radiation.
A. Ozone layer

13. Combines with other pollutants to form acid

rain.
A. Nitrogen oxides & sulfur dioxide

14. The main human activity that releases

greenhouse gases is:
B. Burning fossil fuels
15. What is the Greenhouse Effect?
C. The trapping of the Sun's warmth in the
Earth'satmosphere
