Workbook Tasks 2

OPM-211 Business Statistics

You should be able to answer the following questions after studying contents covered in Chapter 2

1. Voters participating in a recent election exit poll in a Queensland electorate were asked to state their
political party affiliation. Coding the data 1 for Coalition, 2 for minor parties and 3 for Labor, the data
collected were as follows:

3 1 2 3 1 3 3 2 1 3 3 2 1

1 3 2 3 1 3 2 3 2 1 1 3

A. Create frequency/relative frequency distribution tables to summarize the political party

affiliation in the Queensland electorate.
ANSWER:

B. Create a bar/pie chart to display the political party affiliation in the Queensland electorate. Who
is leading?

ANSWER:Complete the following (Report the relevant category/proportion in each slice)

1
You can use Excel to draw the graphs in part B.

2. Voters participating in a recent election exit poll in a Queensland electorate were asked to state their
political party affiliation as well as their gender. Coding the data 1 for Coalition, 2 for minor parties
and 3 for Labor, and F for female, M for male.

3M 1F 2F 3M 1F 3M 3F 2F 1F 3F 3M 2F 1M

1M 3M 2M 3M 1M 3M 2F 3F 2F 1F 1F 3M

A. Create a cross classification table of gender by political affiliation.

B. Derive a relative frequency cross classification table on the basis of row totals using the table
in part A.
ANSWER:

C. Manually create relative frequency bar chart of political affiliation by gender using the table is
part B above. You can also draw these charts using Excel.

2
ANSWER:

D. Is there any relationship between gender and political affiliation?

3. XR04-08 A large investment firm in Sydney wants to review the distribution of the ages of its
stockbrokers. The firm feels that this information will be useful in developing plans relating to
recruitment and retirement options. The ages of a sample of 25 brokers are as follows:

51 64 32 55 41 44 24 46 58 47 36 52 54
44 66 47 59 51 61 57 49 28 42 38 45

A. Construct a frequency and cumulative relative frequency distribution for the data,
using five class intervals and the value 20 as the lower limit of the first class. i.e.
complete the following
ANSWER:

B. Manually construct a relative frequency histogram for the data using the frequency
distribution table above. You can also use Excel to construct the histogram.
ANSWER:

4
C. Construct a frequency polygon using your answer to part B above and comment on the shape of the
distribution.

D. Manually construct an Ogive for the data. Also construct the ogive using Excel.

5
E. What proportion of the total area under the histogram from part (c) falls between 20 and 40?

ANSWER:

F. What proportion of the stockbrokers are between the ages of 20 and 40?

ANSWER: Same answer as e above. This is just a different way of asking the same question.

G. What proportion of the stockbrokers are more than 50 years of age.

ANSWER: From the Ogive, the cumulative relative frequency that corresponds to 50 is 0.56. This
means that 44% (1-0.56=0.44) of the stockbrokers are above 50 years of age.

H. What proportion of the stock brokers are between 40 and 60 years old?

ANSWER: stockbrokers between 40 and 60 = Cumulative frequency at age 60 – cumulative

frequency at age 40 = 0.88 -0.20 = 0.68 68% of stockbrokers are between the ages of 20 and 60.
Concepts to look out for in the coming weeks: You will cover the concepts of median and percentile in
the next two weeks which you can related to the Ogive. 0.88 is for example the 88th percentile which
means 88% of the observation lie between 20 and 60 (inclusive) and 100-88=12% percent lie above it.
50th percentile (which is also the median) lie between 40 and 50.
