PAPER - I PROCESS CONTROL

MODEL QUESTION PAPER

Time: 3 Hrs Maximum Marks: 100
Answer any FIVE questions.
All questions carry equal marks
1. (a) Sketch the output of the controller having only integral mode when the controller is subjected to
the input change shown in fig.Q-1(a). The gain constant of the integral term of the controller is
0.5/minute. The set point is constant at 50%. Explain also whether the load disturbance is persistent.

(b) Explain integral wind up in a controller and the consequences arising out of this wind up.
Describe any one technique to prevent the integral wind up.

2. (a) Discuss the selection of control modes for flow, level, pressure and temperature process.
(b) A process is modeled by the transfer function G(S) given by
10 5
G ( S )= [ −
3 s +1 s+1 ]
Determine the response of the process to a unit step change in the input. Sketch the
Response and comment on the response.
3. (a) Design an IMC based PID controller for the process
K e−t s
d

G ( S )=
τs+1

(b) Deduce the IMC PID controller settings for the process whose gain is 2, time constant is 5
Seconds and time delay is 1 second.

4. (a) Explain the continuous cyclic method of finding controller settings for a process.

(b) Determine the cohen-coon controller settings for the system with transfer function,
50
G ( s )=
( s +4 ) (10 s +1)

5. (a) What is ringing? How ringing can be avoided?

10 e−2 s
(b) A process is described by transfer function of FOPDT given by ( s )= . Design a
0.2 s +1
Dahlin’s and dead beat controllers. Assume sampling period = 1.

6. (a) Derive the transfer functions of

i. Zero order hold
ii. First order hold

(b) Determine the stability of the sampled data control systems described by the following
characteristic equation

Z 4−1.7 Z 3+1.04 Z 2−0.268 Z+ 0.024=0

7. (a) Explain the Relative Gain Array?

(b) Consider the process of following input and output relationships.

1 1
y 1 ( s )= m 1(s)+ m (s)
s+ 1 0.1 s+ 1 2
−0.2 0.8
y 2 ( s )= m1 ( s ) + m (s )
