Following a hugely successful 2016 event, which brought
together some of the biggest names in architecture and
counted Santiago Calatrava, David Chipperfield, Adrian
Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, and Henning Larsen
among its winners, the ABB LEAF Awards return to
London this September for what is already shaping up to
be another very special night.

The annual ceremony is attended by more than 100

figures drawn from the global architectural and design
communities, in town to honour the world’s most
innovative, insightful and important projects, both under
construction and recently completed.

Now in their 17th year, the ABB LEAF Awards are

firmly established as one of the industry’s preeminent
celebrations of architecture that sets new benchmarks for
the discipline as a whole.

Overall Winner:
The ABB LEAF Award will be chosen from the
shortlisted winners to recognise the project that
represents the best architecture in 2017.
Mixed – Use Building of the Year
The ABB LEAF Mixed Use Building of the Year
award recognises projects that combine both
residential and commercial functions. This award
is for buildings that have been completed since
January 2015 or are due for completion by May
2017.
Residential Building of the Year -
Single and Multiple Occupancy
The ABB LEAF Residential Building of the Year
award recognises projects that are specifically used
for residential purposes. Divided into two parts -
Single Occupancy and Multiple Occupancy. This
award is for buildings that have been completed
since January 2015 or are due for completion by
May 2017.
Interior Design Award -
Completed or Future
This Award focuses on Interior Design for either a
new build project or a new refurbishment project
completed since January 2015 and due for
completion by May 2017 (Completed) or under
construction and drawing board (Future).
Commercial Building of the Year
The ABB LEAF Award Commercial Building of the
Year award recognises projects that are specifically
used for commercial purposes. This can be an
office, building/factory, premises/shopping mall/
retail park.This award is for buildings that have
been completed since January 2015 or are due for
completion by May 2017.
Hospitality Building of the Year -
Completed or Future
This award is to celebrate the interior design and
structural design of any hospitality building project.
Whether it be a hotel, a restaurant, or a bar it will be
assessed on the merits of all aspects design within
that project.This award is for buildings that have
been completed since January 2015 or are due for
completion by May 2017. January 2015 or are due

Refurbishment of the Year
The Refurbishment of the Year award is to highlight
the best new concept of an existing building. The
award encompasses interior design, building use
and creative use of materials & space to highlight
change within an exciting building. This award will
look at refurbishments completed since January
2015 – May 2017.
Public Building of the Year
The ABB LEAF Public Building of the Year award
recognises projects that are specifically used for
public purposes. These can include but are not
limited to museums, sports stadia, and healthcare,
industrial and educational buildings. This award is for
buildings that have been completed since January
2015 or are due for completion by May 2017.

Best Sustainable Development -
Completed or Future
This award focuses on design and architectural
innovation relating to the durable and efficient
use of materials, technology and effective energy
consumption in a new or refurbished building.
Entries into the Best Sustainable Development
category should comprise of projects that have
already been completed between January 2015
and May 2017 (Completed) or currently under
construction or drawing board and due for future
completion (Future).
Best Future Building - Under
Construction and Drawing Board
This award celebrates innovative thinking and
approaches to design for building concepts or
projects yet to be built. Entries into the Future
Building category should comprise of projects that
have been tendered and won, either on the drawing
board or under construction.
Urban Design
The ABB LEAF Urban Design Project of the Year
Award recognises projects for the design of public
places, including landscape projects completed and
not completed.

Best Façade Design &
Engineering
This category focuses on façade design. This being
one of the most important elements when evaluating
the aesthetics of a building, as well as the technical
performance. The award will take into account the
overall building envelope of the project in context to
the building design, genre and façade performance
in achieving enclosure of the building, (projects
completed or under construction).
Developer and Development
Project of the Year
The award will celebrate the contribution the
landmark development project will have made to the
overall regeneration of the surrounding area.
The development project should provide enhanced
amenities and living space for local inhabitants.
This award acknowledges the achievements of the
developer and architect in designing for the local
community and international design and architecture,
projects completed or under construction.
The judges
The awards are judged by an invited panel of distinguished
experts from our industry, including designers, architects,
engineers, and clients. Each year we invite a completely new
panel of judges from all disciplines based on their authority,
integrity and experience to reflect our contract design industry.

The number of judges each year can vary but we are

expecting over 20 independent judges for the 2017 panel.

Up to nine independent judges can be appointed for the most

hotly contested categories. No judge, or their company, is
permitted to submit an entry for any category.

The judging procedure
This is the most serious part of our event. We are pleased
to announce that we are again facilitating a transparent and
open judging procedure for 2017. And it is a demanding
and rigorous procedure! We ask every judge to consider
each application according to the criteria for each category,
in line with the submission procedure. (Unfortunately we
cannot accept invitations for a visit to see your product or
project in person because of disadvantaging the international
submissions.) Each judge then considers the whole category,
independently and separately from their co-judges, and
is asked to place their top six deserving entries (their own
shortlist), with comments. They do this without knowing
who their co-judges are at this stage. After each judge has
compiled their results, we at ABB LEAF Awards aggregate all
scores awarded by the judges’ results, in order to establish
the winner.
Payment
Full payment of £300 + VAT per entry must be paid online.
A VAT receipt and a confirmation that you have successfully
entered this year’s ABB LEAF Awards will be automatically
generated and emailed to you. (Note that VAT is only
applicable if you are in the UK).

Who should enter?
The ABB LEAF Awards are open to all architects, designers,
developers and contractors professionals practicing
internationally.

Who will judge the entries?
The ABB LEAF Awards invites a new independent panel of
experts every year who are passionate about design. They
are selected due to their integrity, experience, and in-depth
knowledge of our industry. See Judging Procedure.
When will the entries be judged?

Judging will take place in the summer over several months.
The shortlist will be announced later in the year on the ABB
LEAF Awards website

Winners will remain secret until The ABB LEAF Awards
presentation on 21st September 2017. If your entry is
selected as a finalist we will contact you.

The same piece of work can be entered in more than
one category. The administration fee is payable for each
category you enter.
nnThe judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be
entered into.
