Focus groups – Compare primary and secondary English speaking clinicians & follow physicians to see
how they communication.

English speaking nurses vs. Native English speaking nurses and their utilization of translation
Services for LEP patients
o Suggestion:
- Idea tree : Propose questions to ask & plan when to ask
o Suggestion: Consistently remind nurses to fill out tree & provide resources (pen, stickies
etc.) for easy access.
o Consider incentives to encourage nurse participation (Mentioned utilizing a floor
percentage in order to reward & have nurses hold each other accountable)
o Hold off on Tree for now

o Suggestion: Including more people (Nurse, techs, providers, rehab)

- Keep in mind : Faye had 10 Korean patients on the 6th floor alone this week (seeing an increase
in Korean patients)

- Small focus groups for 3 , 6 , ED & CDU
- Korean nurses speak Korean with patients (& it isn’t captured) which causes tension / boundary
overstepping with primary nurse at times.
- Last week’s recap: Emphasized research focus on mother baby & 4 th floor patients and looking
at their translation usage due to ease of access and sample size.
- Question: What percentage of EJCH staff Speaks English as a secondary language / not a native
speaker?
- Question: Focus groups on what are the barriers, how can we improve, what are your thoughts?
And other open ended questions that won’t steer a specific response.

Note - We are closing in on the direction for the LEP research. The direction seems to be leaning
towards doing a study that focuses on cross-cultural communications between LEP patients and non-
native English speaking clinicians; however, more research needs to be done to solidify potential
research questions & if there is an adequate structure within EJCH to perform this research.

Action Items: EVERYONE to look at gaps in literature; Focus on all languages to see what works as an
intervention for LEP patients (exclude Spanish speakers since there are more tools and studies catered
to Spanish LEP patients). Look 4 validated survey Q’s around communication. EVERYONE to email Ariel

Nurses have asked 4 tips on using Cyracom w/o condensing things to get quicker translations & are
feeling like pt. care isn’t as effective 4 LEP patients.
Nurse and patient frustrations with lack of translation or cultural meanings being lost in translation
Question: Does compliance w/translation technology protocols overshadow true patient care &
decrease humanity?
Question: How do you do EDITH w/ an LEP patient?
Ideas to date - Focus on Perceptions of care with Non-native English speaking caregivers w/ LEP VS.
Native English speakers and LEP patients.
