KINS 4306 – Internship Journal & log

Weekly Total 40

Overall Total 169

Overview:

This week was spent on doing data. I am converting data from the data warehouse from

January all the way until now and sweeping out all of the patients that belong in my research

population. I am looking for patients from the hospital location I am at and those that are on the

4th and 2nd floor of the hospital and their needs for using the Korean or Spanish Interpreter line.

In the days below you will learn a little more about what I am currently working on for this

project and how it will all tie in to the overall research that is being done here for the limited

English proficient patients. Overall, This week has ben uneventful and not as interesting as I’d

hoped for my internship since I am spending a lot of time at my desk and not interacting much

with people. I know that once the data is complete I will be in more meetings and hopefully,

interviewing patients for the next step of this project so I really look forward to that portion of

this.

Monday:

I came into the office then went to the Morning huddle at 9:15. Today I met with Maria to

discuss the plans for the rest of the week. It was nice to finally be able to access the Emory

network so I am now able to use their computer and have access to other things such as their

library which is needed for me to finish the lit review that I have been working on. I also got

familiar with the log in process as well as how to do some of the data stuff that I will be working

on for the rest of the week. I got through a good bit of the data today and am happy. Hopefully

the rest of this research goes as smoothly as today w

ent. Tuesday: I came into the office then went to the Morning huddle at 9:15. I have been having

a lot of computer issues so today I had to catch up and redo some of the work from yesterday

because my computer crashed and it did not save my work to the desk top like I had tried to do. I

learned that the desktop does not actually save anything since it is a system wide program and

that everything needs to be saved to a specific drive so it can be accessed which was a rough way

to learn that.

Wednesday:

I came into the office then went to the Morning huddle at 9:15. Today was sent with me

at my desk combing through data It is very hard to move as quickly through it as id like too

because the file I have created holds information from all hospitals and causes Excel to run

slowly. The good thing is that I have gotten into a groove of doing it which is nice and I have

been able to nock out the month of September and most of August. This is a lot of data to sift

through so far, I believe I have looked at over 2,000 patient data entires ignorer to select the ones

I need for this study.

Thursday:

I came into the office then went to the Morning huddle at 9:15. Today I did data in excel

sheets and we went out for lunch to celebrate a team members birthday. I spent the beginning and

the rest of the day sifting through data from the data warehouse and trying to find more ways to

make the process more efficient and to limit the amount of times my computer freezes on me. I

am thankful for some of the others in the office who have been willing to answer my questions

and assist if needed.

Friday:

Today I did not go to morning huddle and went straight to my office to look at the data

and find relations between the patients I had already extracted for the research to cross reference

them with those who are on record for using interpretations through the hospital. This was hard

because some of the occurrences were documented on the interpretation line but the patients

weren’t recorded on the list of needing or having a different language preference besides English.

I also saw that some were being recorded as needing the service however not recorded for

actually using it.
