This document describes Project CALM (Contextualization and Adaptation of Learning Materials) in the New Normal at Buli National High School. The project aims to increase student motivation and learning by contextualizing self-learning modules to be more relevant to students' local experiences. It also aims to increase parent involvement by making modules easier for them to understand. Initial data showed average student test scores of 52.3%, below the target of 75%. The project will involve teachers contextualizing and adapting modules, and creating new activity sheets, to better engage students and parents in learning during distance education. Progress will be tracked by calculating weekly average test scores in each subject and grade level.

Project CALM in the New Normal: An Innovation
Title: Project CALM (Contextualization and Adaptation of Learning Materials) in
the New Normal Goals: 1. Increase the MPS in all subject areas in a certain test or exam. 2. Enhance the learning aspect of every learners. 3. Motivate the students to read and answer the given activities. 4. Increase parent’s involvement in facilitating the learning process. Risk Factors: Low MPS, Low motivational level, Low parent’s involvement Objectives: 1. To increase the MPS from 52.3% to 75% and up. 2. To motivate the students to read and answer the given activities through contextualization of learning materials. 3. To increase the parent’s involvement in facilitating the learning process. 4. To identify other supports to learners if required. MOVs: MPS, Class Record, Activity Completion Report, Pictures
Description of the Problem:
Covid-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes not just in Philippines but also in every corner of the world. It greatly affects the education system in every country. The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines extends lots of efforts to initiate and implement a program not just to cater the needs of learners in education but also keeping them safe. Thus, Distance Learning Delivery Modality (DLDM) exists. The said initiative implements in Eastern Visayas which aimed to carry-out the learning process while staying at home. Before the start of classes, all regions are required to make and produce Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) and/or Learner’s Modules (LMs) to be used in distance learning. But only selected master teachers are the ones to trained to produce such modules. Hence, the content of there module (like the situation, names, etc.) will purely based on their locality. With that, students and parents in another locality (who use that module) perhaps can’t fully relate to such thing. Making them bored and less motivated in reading and answering the activities. If the student gets bored, they are unwilling to learn. However, the other way is observed when learners are interested (Sözer, 2005, as cited in Gültekin & Berk, 2011). Hence, keeping their interest is the key. The data in Table 1 are the computed scores of Buli National High School students enrolled in the first semester of the school year 2020 – 2021 in the new normal. Based on the computed data in the said table, Grade 7 has the lowest average MPS with 50.5, while Grade 12 has the highest average MPS with 54.5. The average MPS from week 1 – 3 in all grade level is 52.3 which falls in average performance level. It is so far from the mastery level of 75. Therefore, this intervention of great help to these learners. Mean Percentage Score (MPS) Average Grade Level Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Grade 7 50.2 50.7 50.5 50.5 Grade 8 50.4 51.5 51.3 51.1 Grade 9 51.6 50.2 52.8 51.5 Grade 10 53.9 53.1 50.3 52.4 Grade 11 52.6 53.3 54.9 53.6 Grade 12 55.8 53.5 54.3 54.5 Average 52.4 52.1 52.4 52.3 Table 1. Average MPS from Week 1 – 3 in all Grade Level This Project Contextualization and Adaptation of Learning Materials (CALM) in the new normal focuses on the contextualization and adaptation of the SLMs and LMs that was made in all regions depending on the availability of the module in a certain topic. Hence, modification in learning materials can enhance the instructional stimuli to allow learners which leads to a better result (Gunter, Denny, & Venn, 2000). Furthermore, if the module is contextualized and adapted, the parents will also be able to relate to what they have read on the module because the situation will be changed something that happened within the barangay or within the town of Bato. There will be also instances that the situations are changed based on the student’s or parent’s daily actuations. The teachers are also required to make their own contextualized Activity Sheets or Worksheets. Project Description: Project CALM in the new normal is an initiative which mainly focused on contextualizing and adapting the downloaded SLMs and LMs from any regions. This project will also encourage teachers to produce their own contextualized Learners Activity Sheets (LAS). This will ensure that both parents and students can understand and relate to their experiences to better answer the given activities in the module and/or LAS. A week after the implementation of this project, the subject teacher will compute the MPS in his/her subject/s then give the result to the adviser to compute the average MPS in all subjects in each grade level. Afterwards, the result should be submitted to the principal for further analysis and present to all the teachers. After the deliberation, the teachers should have the brainstorming to solve if there are still problems. An immediate implementation of this project is a must. The result we get from this project will be of great help to further enhance and improve this project
