VIETNAM TRADITIONAL CRAFT VILLAGES ATTRACT TOURISTS
Vietnam traditional craft villages, whose age-old cultural values and techniques passed down from
generation to generation, are popular destinations for tourists. According to the Vietnam Crafts Association,
Vietnam has more than 2,000 craft villages, each with their own traditional art practices. They specialize in
lacquer painting, pottery, porcelain, embroidery, rattan knitting, textiles, paper, folk print and many others.
Most of the villages are near big roads, so tourists can easily visit them. Hanoi has the most craft villages in
the country and attracts the most tourists to them. Annual traditional crafts festivals bring success to their
famous handicrafts. The festivals help to promote local hand-made products.
Other provinces and cities such as Bac Ninh, Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang have built their websites
to show their crafts products and advertise some tours to their crafts villages. Hanoi’s well-known Bat Trang
pottery village has a unique initiative to take visitors to its pottery kilns with rustic carts. Local craftsman
Nguyen Van Hai said the carts have helped to bring visitors to the village “Thanks to this kind of vehicle,
the number of tourists at our village has increased three or four times.”
