Read about these students’ experiences on a gap
year before they started university.
(A) Richard is studying English. He went to
India.
What did you do?
I volunteered with a street children’s program in
India. These children don’t have families so you
need to show a lot of compassion, have empathy
and give them lots of love. As part of the program, I
had to teach them English and play games with
them. I always wanted to visit India and this trip was
a life-changing experience for me. I learnt a lot
about a very different culture. Everything is
incredibly different, so you need to show tolerance.
Some of the people I met were really amazing. I
saw some beautiful places while I was travelling. My
favourite place has got to be the Taj Mahal – it’s the
most spectacular building I’ve ever seen.
(B) Elizabeth is studying Business Studies. She
went to Australia, New Zealand and
Tasmania.
What did you do?
I always wanted to travel a lot and try out new
things. I’ve been kayaking and trail biking in some
beautiful places in England before, but kayaking
with dolphins in Byron Bay in Australia was much
more enjoyable. After that, I went trail biking in
Craigieburn Forest Park in New Zealand. That was
one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.
The scenery in the Park was spectacular! While I
was in New Zealand, I met a group of students from
South Africa and we became friends. They wanted
to go rock climbing in Tasmania, so I joined them
because I still had money in my budget and didn’t
want to miss out on the opportunity. I can tell you:
the rocks in Coles Bay were terrifying!
