PROJECT PROPOSAL
CHAPTER ONE

TOPIC: ENHANCEMENT OF THE PIGGERY UNIT BY BAGANDA

NKOBAZAMBOGO STUDENTS ASSOCIATION-BUKUNJA (BUIKWE)
CONTACT PERSON:

TEL:

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND
Piggery unit is a practice of coming up with a well organized and proper way of rearing pigs and piglets.
in this practice, there include construction of stys, feeding of pigs and piglets, proper medication, off-
selling of pigs for pork and piglets to other farmers. According to the available market, hybrid piglets and
locally reared piglets for other farmers to procure, and mature ready pigs for pork widely spread almost
in all parts of Uganda and outside Uganda (where they export tinned pork),the demand is much less
than the supply. So, for that case therefore, we have opted to enlarge on our piggery unit so that we can
be able to meet the demands in and outside available market. On the other hand the association can get
manure to apply in our plantations.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The association initiated a piggery unit located in Nantwala village in Mr. Wasswa Samson's premise our
patron. The unit is too small to accommodate the available pigs and piglets, poor condition in terms of
construction, pigs are poorly fed because of limited resources which has lugged behind our Target of
approximately thirty pigs reared annually.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The main purpose of the project is to enhance/enlarge the piggery unit so as we can be able to
feed/supply the demands of the community which will stimulate the increment of our income.

II. To increase the number of pigs and piglets to reach a minimum of thirty (30) pigs so that at the
end of the year the association can benefit.
III. To improve, construct more stys to enhance their standards so as to maintain sanitation leading
to production of high quality pigs.
IV. To improve means of medication to promote health of these pigs and piglets hence high
competition at the ready market.
V. To change breeds of pigs and piglets reared to improve diet so that to intimate faster growth for
faster expansion of the piggery unit.

In May of 2015, Miss Lutti begun with only two (2) pigs reared in two stys. She reared these pigs for a
period of nine months, each pig gave birth to a minimum of five piglets. She didn't sale these piglets
rather she just expanded her project. And of now we visited her in her residence of Nantwala. We found
out that her project in 2020 had expanded to a number of sixty pigs (60).she has had this project running
for a period of five years but in a due course she has registered some achievements and failures.

a. ACHIEVEMENTS
 The piggery unit expanded beyond her expectations as she registered a large number of pigs.
 Miss lutti's pigs became very health due to good medication services she offers to her pigs hence
realising ready and available market for her pigs that are not out competed by other people
running the same project.
 Income inlets incur at her piggery unit from other sources like facilitations fee as each visitation
of her piggery unit costs one hundred thousand hence this has greatly led to the expansion of
her piggery unit.

b. FAILURES.
 Shortage of labour due to expansion of the piggery unit such as labour for fetching water,
cleaning the stys hence became so tiresome to miss lutti.
 No room for further expansion due to inadequate land for construction of other structures (stys)
at Miss lutt's premise.
