covid-19 and looming education crisis

The article discusses “COVID 19 and looming education crisis. The effects of COVID 19 pandemic on
education. Post COVID 19 education crisis. Digital education is the need of time. COVID 19 and
looming education crisis.”

As per United Nations Organization report, the COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest
disruption of education system in human history. It has affected nearly 1.6 billion learners in more
than 190 countries. The closures of schools, colleges and other learning institutions have affected 94
percent of world’s student population. In this article we will know how COVID-19 pandemic is
creating education crisis in Pakistan and other parts of the world.

COVID-19 Pandemic A Divine Curse Or Cure?

To cope with the rapid spread of Corona Virus in public, government decided to implement
lockdown policy to keep people at home and thus minimizes social interaction. The policy though
helped a lot in fighting the pandemic; it however resulted in the decrease of economic activities such
as production and sale of goods and services. This affected public schools’ budget in one way or
another which mostly comes from sale tax.

COVID 19 pandemic and the successive lockdowns have already affected learning progress of
students all over the world. If the lockdown and closure of school and colleges policy proceeded like
way it will devastated the future of many learners around the globe. Students will not be able to
cover curriculum of their previous grades.

COVID-19 Pandemic Myths And Reality

Due to successive lockdown and closure of schools and colleges for months many parents have
refused to pay their children’s school and college fee. This has created odd situation for many
learning institutions particularly low cost private schools in the country which are unable to pay
salaries to its staff on their own. This situation has increased the possibility of their closure which will
not only increase unemployment in the country but will also risk the future of many learners.

The pandemic has also increased the rate of dropout in school and colleges. Hunger, unemployment
and poverty are the major reasons behind it.
COVID 19 Exposed Health Disparities in Pakistan

One of the major flaws in online learning system in Pakistan that lockdown highlighted is the lack of
proper internet infrastructure in the country. Internet service in the country particularly in its
remote areas is very poor and users often face the problem of frequent disconnection. Due to this
reason students often miss some of their classes.

Arrangement of online classes needs additional resources plus a proper setup that most of the low
cost private schools does not possess. This has increased the lack of uniformity in schooling system
in the country which is already facing the challenge.

With exposing flaws in country’s internet infrastructure the online learning system has also created
many new challenges in the learning process such as the need of an online assessment system for
students and their attendance in the class. Other challenges include the access of every student to
internet, the availability of relevant data online and the security of server to overcome its hacking
and ensure the assessment to be fair and up to the mark.

Shutdown of schools and colleges due to the pandemic is not option. Education cannot wait and
therefore we must find alternative ways for continuing the education our young generation. At the
moment we must improve our online learning system because the future of education system is
linked with it.

COVID-19 Pandemic A Divine Curse Or Cure?

covid-19 pandemic a divine curse or cure

The article discusses “COVID-19 Pandemic a divine curse or cure? Corona Virus outbreak and its
effects on society and environment. Coronavirus pandemic; is the earth filtering itself? COVID-19
Pandemic a divine curse or cure?”

Soon after the implementation of lockdown worldwide to combat COVID-19 pandemic, a debate
regarding both the positive and negative effects of the virus on society and environment began.
People began to ask whether it is a divine curse or cure. This was mainly because the pandemic has
mixed effects on both the society and environment. On one g schooling and economic affairs while
on the other hand it has initiated the healing of global eco-system. These mixed effects have made it
complicated to clearly say whether it is a curse or cure.

COVID-19 A Divine Curse?

The World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020 declared COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic
and asked countries to take effective steps to control its further spread. To cope with the spread of
the virus effectively, ban was imposed by the governments on all types of social gathering and thus
the virus deprived people of their social freedom.

COVID-19 Pandemic Myths And Reality

Similarly schools, colleges and universities were closed and people were restricted to their homes.
By changing people lives all of a sudden, people began calling the virus a curse.
COVID-19 Pandemic also affected the economy of both developing and developed nations. Closure
of most of the small entrepreneurs and limitation of working hours worldwide resulted in the
decrease of economic output.

Likewise many daily wagers due to weeks’ long lockdown not only lose their jobs but also faced
hungers. Due to this reason burden on charity food stalls increased.

COVID 19 And Looming Education Crisis

Similarly due to ban on social gathering worship places of both Muslims and Non Muslims were held
closed for sometimes and this was what made people, particularly Muslims worried and they began
calling the pandemic a divine curse.

The lockdown pushed world to pre-globalization era by cutting off people from each other due to
cancelation of both national and international flights and other transportation services.

COVID-19 A Divine Cure?

Whereas COVID-19 pandemic has many negative impacts on society and lives of people, it also has
some positive and very important effects on environment. Some of which are given below.

COVID 19 Exposed Health Disparities in Pakistan

The Corona virus 2019 pandemic has proved in many ways helpful for the environment. The earth
during the pandemic has begun filtering itself. According to US National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA) agency report during pandemic the concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide in USA
air has decreased by 25.5 percent. In China it has dropped by 10-30 percent while in some European
states such as Bergamo, Spain, Barcelona and Italy the concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide during the
pandemic has declined by 47 to 55 percent. According to National Geographic report in India the
concentration of Nitrogen Dioxide during COVID-19 pandemic has dropped by 70 percent.

The pandemic has also resulted in the decrease of noise pollution worldwide. Whereas the lockdown
decreased movement of cars and other vehicles on the roads globally, it also decreased human
activities and confined people to their homes. According to Science Magazine report lockdown
resulted in 50 percent decrease in seismic noise. Human activity on the surface of the earth causes
vibration that propagated deep into the ground as high frequency seismic waves.
According to DW (Deutsche Wells) news report worldwide lockdowns healed record-size Ozone hole
over the Arctic hemisphere. The hole was about three times bigger than the size of Greenland. The
lockdown also helped in the repairing of Ozone layer over the globe.

The pandemic has also bought a major shift in focus of the world leaders from weapons to health
sector.

Ten years ago World Health Organization (WHO) had declared Swine Flu a pandemic in Europe and
so many European countries had spent billions of dollars on the manufacturing of vaccine, mask and
gloves that in the end were not needed. COVID-19 proved somehow beneficial for the manufacturer
as it consumed whole of their stocks.

Coronavirus pandemic also bought a revolution in health sciences. It leads to the development and
use of new diagnostic techniques and detecting patterns of COVID-19 with the help of Artificial
Intelligence.

Conclusion

The mixed effects of COVID-19 pandemic on society and environment have made it difficult to
clearly say whether it is a curse or cure. Whereas it has devastating effects on society, politics and
economy, it also has helped in the healing of environment and eco-system by limiting man’s some
hazardous activities.
The Pandemic vs Fake News

the pandemic vs fake news

Written By: Shoaib Ahmed

As the outbreak of the virus took place in China, the world saw China hiding actual number of cases,
its spread, and how fatal it might be. These things remain misinformed to the world. This
misinformation not only caused the spread of the COVID-19 across the world but also kept at bay
countries from taking immediate measures to contain the virus. The misinformation caused
hundreds of thousands of deaths across the globe. USA, Western Europe, Russia, Brazil and South
Asian countries i.e., India, Pakistan has been hotspots of this pandemic. A video got viral regarding
the outbreak of the virus. (COVID-19 Pandemic A Divine Curse Or Cure?) It claimed huge surge of
Covid-19 infected patients at Service Hospital Lahore. Later confirmation from authorities explained
that due to short circuit, one of the wards of hospital patients were moved to another ward. This
twisting of events is increasing the panic which discourages patients to appear for testing as well as
admission in hospital. Besides there is fear in some quarters of population that COVID-19 infected
people are put under strict conditions in quarantine and isolation centers. Misinformation regarding
the handing over of dead bodies to relatives has also risked hospitals’ staff lives. There is also a
common misconception among the masses regarding the virus which is that the virus dies down
once an infected person passes away. However in reality the dead body can still spread the virus. An
event took place at JMPC Karachi, where a COVID-19 patient died. Upon hearing the news, relatives
of the patient broke into the hospital and threatened hospital authorities to hand over the dead
body. But the authorities refused to hand over the dead body. Because of this the relatives of dead
patient attacked the hospital staff and broke the medical equipment of the hospital. Such events are
creating fear in the heart of the doctors who are fighting on the frontlines against the pandemic.
State of denial from government officials from severity to prevention of COVID-19 is now causing
panic among the masses. The number of cases is increasing at an alarming rate and the health care
system is on the verge of being overwhelmed observing averagely 4000 cases daily compared to
hundreds initially. The masses have also adopted this state of denial, with mild symptoms patients
unwilling to visit for testing. The fear of the COVID-19 has already worsened situation in the country.
Officials as well as masses have to collectively put their efforts in curbing the COVID-19.
COVID-19 Pandemic Myths And Reality

covid-19-pandemic-myths-and-reality

The article discusses “COVID-19 pandemic myths and reality. Coronavirus pandemic and different
theories about its emergence. Is COVID-19 manmade or natural?”

According to The Guardian March 2020, report the first known case of Corona Virus (COVID-19) was
reported in China on 17 November 2019, weeks before concerned authorities officially recognized
the new virus. Since then an unending process of the reporting of new cases began worldwide. To
this day the total number of Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, reported cases worldwide are
39.3 million according to World Health Organization October (WHO) 2020 report. Whereas its
sudden appearance and devastating effects on society, politics and economy has left people
uncertain about their future it also lead to the development of numerous speculations about the
emergence of the virus.

COVID-19 Pandemic A Divine Curse Or Cure?

Action and statements of some organizations, countries and their leaders has made the emergence
of COVID-19 more controversial than any other similar virus. For example the World Health
Organization in its February 2018, annual review of the Blueprint list of priority disease had added an
unknown disease with the name of “Disease X”. Though the organization in its explanation of the
disease had argued that it could be any disease and plague but the purpose of listing it was that we
should be mentally ready for it. Similarly Chinese President Xi Jinping in an address to People’s
Liberation Army (PLA) in January 2019 had given them orders to get ready for an upcoming Black
Swine and then after 11 months the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Wuhan city of China.
Many analysts argued that this cannot be co-incidence and that the President was aware of the
upcoming pandemic.
Similarly a YouTuber on 15 November published a video on his YouTube channel “Thoughty2”
explaining the same disease that was highlighted by WHO, just two days before the first case was
reported in China.

COVID 19 And Looming Education Crisis

Another important factor that makes COVID-19 controversial was the release of a Hollywood movie
Contagion in 2011, in which an exact situation that the world is facing today had been depicted. A
viral disease that spreads from China and that has same symptoms and devastating effects on
world’s health, economy and politics had been showed beautifully in the movie.

Another very controversial aspect of the disease is its emergence. Some people believed that the
virus has been manufactured in lab and main objective of the manufacturers is to get advantage of
the world’s devastating economic situation. They present the example of China which successfully
took over control of the disease after fighting it for six to eight months. Now she is busy in expanding
its territory (conflict with India in Ladakh) and economic ties.

COVID 19 Exposed Health Disparities in Pakistan

All the above mentioned arguments are only speculations and they have no link with reality. It is
time that we should take collective steps against the pandemic because it has not only devastated
our economy and health sector but also has paralyzed our social life. One thing that COVID-19 has
made crystal clear is that our objective should be health not weapons.

Growing Need of Reliable E-learning Platforms amid Coronavirus in Pakistan

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, there is a need for reliable e-learning platform in Pakistan. Here’s
how Pakistan is adopting e-learning to cope in the lockdown.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken over the globe and the whole world is currently reeling from its
disastrous effects. Pakistan is no exception to this crisis, as cases continue to skyrocket day by day.
With currently no cure in sight, countries have been forced to adopt strict social distancing rules in
order to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

This has led to the adoption to what is now being referred to as the “new normal”. Businesses have
been ordered to shut their offices and switch to a work from home system, restaurants and cafes are
only taking delivery orders, and car services such as Careem are offering grocery pick-up and delivery
services.

Status Of Women in Education in Pakistan

At the same time, schools and all other educational institutes have been ordered to remain shut
until at least July 15th. Many predict that the lockdown will remain imposed on schools in the next
term as well. This has led to the urgent need for reliable e-learning platforms to continue the school
term.

What is e-learning?

E-learning refers to the transfer of educational curriculum via an electronic medium, This usually
uses a secure internet connection and electronic device such as a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone.

In its essence, e-learning provides a convenient learning experience whereby students are able to
receive lectures, notes, past papers, and study materials from the comfort of their home. However,
in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this “convenient learning experience” has become
a “necessary learning experience”.

E-learning Amid Coronavirus in Pakistan

E-learning provides a safe and secure way for students to receive quality education and smooth
communication, whilst maintaining social distancing orders. They do not have to risk entering a
classroom and being exposed to the virus. Hence, reliable online learning mediums have become the
need of the hour.

Education System in Pakistan Issues And Problems

Virtual Lectures

Most schools, universities, and educational institutes have adopted the US-founded video
conferencing software, Zoom, as their primary medium for live online lectures. This cloud-based
software allows teachers to create a “session”, or class, and invite their students to join. Students
are able to join the link to enter the virtual classroom. Here, teachers are able to deliver their usual
lectures, and use the “screen sharing” option to display lecture notes and slides.
Since the onset of the government-imposed lockdown to limit the spread of COVID-19, Zoom has
experienced a massive boom in sales. This is because it is providing an effective means of online
lectures to schools all around the world, including in Pakistan.

Online Study Tools

As for study materials such as book notes, solved past papers, and MCQs, the top option among
schools in Pakistan has become tutoria.pk. As Pakistan’s first comprehensive online exam
preparation platform, it seems to have launched at just the right time. It provides high-quality online
study materials, catered specially to matric and intermediate students of all educational boards.

COVID-19 Pandemic Myths And Reality

Teachers are able to use tutoria.pk’s book notes to aid their lectures. Moreover, with no other way
to provide students with paper-based assignments, teachers are easily able to assign the solved past
papers or practice MCQs as an assignment.

On the other hand, students can use the solved past papers and MCQs to prepare for their exams in
place of the physical tuition centers and academies. With no knowing of how long the COVID-19
pandemic will last, and how future board examinations will be conducted, this is an ideal way to
keep up with exam preparation.

The future of e-learning in Pakistan

Therefore, it is clear to see that e-learning platforms have done a superb job of helping schools and
educational institutions in Pakistan to smoothly transition to a learn from home system. However,
there is still a learning curve to overcome, as the concept of e-learning is a relatively new concept for
many students and teachers in the country.

Uncertainty is the key problem during this COVID-19 pandemic. As the government is unsure of how
long the closure will last, we can only hope that schools will continue to improve their e-learning
experience and adopt additional online learning solutions to fill the gaps that they are currently
facing. This is the best way to ensure that students can continue their quality education in the face
of this pandemic.

covid 19 exposed health disparities in pakistan

The article discusses “COVID 19 exposed health disparities in Pakistan. Covid-19 and health care’s
digital revolution. Covid 19 and health disparities. Corona virus pandemic exposed disparities in our
health care system. COVID 19 exposed health disparities in Pakistan.”

The 2019 Corona Virus pandemic proved that health is more important than defense and other
security and economic measures for a state. . No one has ever thought that a viral disease can
proved so fatal that it may nearly destroy world’s economy. The pandemic taught us two things;
what our health sector lacks and what steps we should take to cope with the pandemic and other
similar diseases in the future.

COVID-19 Pandemic A Divine Curse Or Cure?

COVID 19 exposed disparities within health care system of many countries including Pakistan. It
exposed the lack of proper infrastructure of health care system and government inability to deal
with the pandemic properly. In many third world countries patients were directed to quarantine
themselves in home and do not visit hospitals to minimize burden on state’s health sector.

COVID-19 Pandemic Myths And Reality

The pandemic also highlighted the failure of government in many countries including United States
of America, to educate public properly about the disease and to force them to follow SOPs (Standard
Operating Procedures). According to Lawrence Larry Summers, former US treasury secretary and
leading economist, America could have saved trillion dollars if it had handled Corona Virus pandemic
as well as Pakistan had did.

Another important factor that the pandemic highlighted is the need of digital revolution of health
care system. We lack both resources and tools to deal with deadly viral infections such as the COVID
19 properly.

COVID 19 And Looming Education Crisis

Over the past few decades a shift from health to defense sector by many countries of the world had
been observed. Many countries such as USA, Russia and China had sliced the budget of their health
care system and had shifted their focus towards the manufacturing of more deadly weapons. This
had created a room for the birth of deadly viral disease which we faced in the shape of COVID 19.

Corona virus pandemic opened our eyes. It taught us the following things.

We should overcome disparities in our health sector to make our health care system more effective
and affordable for every citizen. Our health system also needs digital revolution so that we could
minimize the chance of pandemics in future.
Civil-Military Relations in Pakistan

In spite of different impacts of military political intervention on politics and economy of a state, most
of the political scientists agree that there is a direct link between the political culture and socio-
economic conditions of the states witnessing the rise of the military to political power. Most of these
states fall in the category of the poor and the developing nations.

Nuclear Program of Pakistan, its Safety And Security And International Concerns

Factors Lead Military to Political Power

Some of the important factors that lead military to political power in a state have been highlighted in
below paragraphs.

It has been widely observed that military usually took over in states where political stability is
inadequate. It put army in difficult situation and they cannot decide how to cope both with internal
and external threats at the same time. The army therefore, to bring situation back to normal in
country, takes over the government.

When every institution of a state is powerful enough that it check and balance the power of every
other institution, only then the state can develop and democracy can groom. The basic pillars of
state/democracy/government are; legislative, executive, judiciary and media (in modern world).
Military took over in a state when all or most of these pillars are weak, corrupt and not working
properly.
Weak democratic structure with many loopholes in the government system and its working, gives
military an opportunity to gain strong foothold in country politics and often a chance to take over
the government.

Incompetency on the part of politicians and economy too has a strong relation with military
intervention in state affairs. We have seen military usually takes over in states with weak economy
and incompetent political leaders.

Civil-Military Relations in Pakistan

In Pakistan military took over government four times, in 1958, 1969, 1977 and 1999. There are
mixed beliefs about military role in politics in Pakistan. Some people believed that military have a
strong foothold in country’s politics while others believe the other way.

History of Military Took Over in Pakistan

In 1953, Prime Minister Khwaja Nazimmudin was sacked by Governor General when he slashed
military budget by one-third. This not only reinforced military position but also gave her first taste of
civilian affairs and political process, encouraged and facilitated her to be aspirant for ruling position.

Then in 1954, Muhammad Ali Bogra on the instructions of Governor General Malik Ghulam
Muhammad formed new cabinet after the dissolution of Constituent Assembly. The cabinet formed
by Muhammad Ali Bogra included General Muhammad Ayub Khan, the then Commander in Chief of
Pakistan army as Defense Minister, Major General Iskandar Mirza as Home Minister and Dr. Khan
Sahib. Supremacy of civilian over military was vanished by the induction of army in the cabinet.

Current Situation

Last martial law was imposed in 1999 by General Pervaiz Musharaf. He ruled the country till 2008,
when he resigned from presidency and hand over the control of the country to Pakistan People Party
(PPP) elected government.

Today a group of people believed that military controlled and run Pakistan Tehrek-i-Insaf (PTI)
government from behind the scene. Others believed that as Pakistan army has never remained as
supportive and on the same page with a government as it is today so people are misbelieving that
army is controlling the government.

Pakistan People Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League (PMLN) leaders and workers blame army
for their ongoing court trials in the country. PMLN believed that army has played major role in over
throwing Nawaz Shareef government and in the election of Imran Khan.
Whereas military operations in Northern Areas of Pakistan against militant groups earned great
pride and respect for Pakistan army it also led to the development of hatred for army in many
groups among people. One such group is Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) that blames army for
atrocities and excesses done in Tribal areas such as North and South Waziristan, Swat and other
areas of Pashtoon belt. Whereas many people support PTM and demand justice and the recovery of
missing love ones, others believed that it is an Indian propaganda against Pakistan army.

Today a group of analysts believed that army is not taking direct control of the government because
it has already attained its major objectives that are de-facto control of the country nuclear and
missile programs, Key foreign relationships, the military budget and national security decision
making. Others believe that the army is not taking direct control of the government because the
army herself has observed that its high level of professionalism and all sacrifices have overshadowed
due to their political intervention.

Conclusion

The chaotic civil-military relations over the past seven decades have cost Pakistan the loss of its true
democratic image internationally, poor economic growth and immense human rights violation.
Today for the first time in Pakistan history the army has kept away herself from political intervention
for a long time that almost becomes twelve years since 2008. This seems promising for the future
development and prosperity of the country.
