LABORATORY EXERCISE NO. 10
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Name: Llamado, Annie Claire I. Section: 10 Date Submitted: Oct 30 2021

I. INTRODUCTION
The endocrine system is composed of endocrine glands and specialized endocrine cells
located throughout the body. These glands secrete hormones which produce a particular
response in the target tissues. Overall, the system regulates major physiological processes in the
human body.

II. GIVE AT LEAST 3 MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Metabolism, Growth and Development, Sleeping and Waking Cycles

III. ANATOMY OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM GLANDS

Below is an illustration of the glands that comprise the endocrine system. Identify each
gland with an arrow and label with the corresponding number for each part.
1. Pineal gland 4. Parathyroids 7. Adrenals
2. Pituitary 5. Thymus 8. Ovaries
3. Thyroid 6. Pancreas 9. Testes

Answer each item guided by the specific instructions for each question set.
A. True/False
Indicate whether the sentence or statement is true or false.

T 1. The endocrine glands are ductless glands that secrete their hormones directly into the
bloodstream.

F 2. Lactogenic hormone (LTH), also known as prolactin, stimulates the production of ova
in the female ovary.

T 3. The pineal gland produces the hormone serotonin.

T 4. There are three classifications of hormones: modified amino acids, proteins, and
steroid hormones.

F 5. Hyperthyroidism in adults results in sluggishness, fatigue, and fluid accumulation in

subcutaneous tissues.

B. Completion
Complete each sentence or statement.

6. Acidosis is a state of increased acidity of the blood due to the breakdown of fats when the
blood sugar level is very low.

7. Cortisone a steroid closely related to cortisol, is given as a medication to reduce

inflammation and as a treatment for arthritis.

8. Gigantism occurs as a result of excessive secretion of the growth hormone before the bones
stop growing.

9. The adrenal glands are made up of the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla.

10. The term for an increase in urine production is polyuria.

11. The female hormones that cause the development of female reproductive structures and
secondary female sexual characteristics are estrogen and progesterone.

12. The hormone responsible for causing contraction of uterine smooth muscles during childbirth
is oxytocin.

13. The female hormones are produced by the ovaries.

14. The hormones estrogen and progesterone are secreted by the ovaries.

15. The outer part of the adrenal gland is called the adrenal cortex while the inner part of the
adrenal gland is called the adrenal medulla.
