A. Multiple Choice: Encircle the letter that corresponds to the correct answer.

1. It is the process of breaking big rocks into little ones.

a. Exfoliation c. Mass wasting
b. Hydration
. Physical weathering
2. Which is an example of oxidation?
a. due to the absorption of water by rock its volume increases.
. rust decomposes rocks completely with passage of time.
c. some of the minerals dissolved in water.
d. the joints enlarge in size and lime is removed in solution.
3. It refers to the downslope movement of rock, soil, and ice due to gravity.
a. Erosion
. Mass wasting
b. Landslide
d. Weathering
4. It is the process in which sediments settle out of the transporting medium.
c. Landslides
. Deposition d. Mass wasting
b. Erosion
5. It is the chemical breakdown of a substance when combined with water
a. Acidification c. Hydrolysis
b. Carbonation
. Oxidation

B. Compare and Contrast:

1. Mechanical and chemical weathering

Mechanical weathering occur near the surface of the earth. Mechanical weathering make the
rock break into smaller pieces. It happen when the rock is force by another substance such as
the ice. While, Chemical weathering happens when a substance dissolves the rock. Chemical
weathering is also caused by the chemical reaction when combined with water or a substance.

2. Frost wedging and oxidation weathering

Frost wedging occurs when a rock has a crack and a water gets in crack on it then it freezes.
when the ice continue to increase its volume it will trigger the rock to expand it will make the
crack bigger and bigger that will cause the rock to break. While oxidation is when the iron in
the rock combines with water for example, acid water combined with or had contact with the
rock this will causes rust on the rock that will weaken the rock and it will make the rock to
break.

3. Thermal expansion and hydration

Thermal expansion weathering mostly occur in desert places, it happens when the rock heated
by the sun and as it cools at night. The hot days and cold nights can contribute to the
breakdown of the rocks. This simply shows that it happens from temperature changes. While
hydration is when a mineral change as its interact with water.

4. Transport and deposition

Transport is when a sediment/s is being transported from the place of its origin to another
location. While, deposition is when the weathered rock is being eroded and it will settle down
in only one place or in one particular place.

Critical Thinking: Give brief but meaningful sentences.

1. What is weathering and why is it important?

Weathering is the process of breaking, dissolving or weakening of the rock. Weathering is

important because it leads formation of materials. Weathering processes leads the producing
of soil which is really important for plants, animals and even for the humans.

2. How do rocks and soil move downslope?

Movement of the rock and soil downslope is caused by the mass movement, it is an erosional process in
which the rock moves downslope. It is also due to force of the gravity.

3. Where do sediments go?

Erosion makes the sediments go to the bottom of the rivers or waterfalls it is the common area where
sediments go.

4. What are the causes of physical weathering?

The causes of physical weathering are freezing, change in temperature or rain. Physical weathering is
also caused by the animals and human activities.

5. What are the causes of chemical weathering?

Chemical weathering is caused by the acidification like for example the acid rain and it combined in the
rock and the rock becomes weak that causing it to break that is called chemical weathering.

A. Research sample pictures of the physical and chemical weathering and paste it inside the box.
