Java. "Gus Dur" is a Muslim figure who upholds justice and tolerance in the country. Gus Dur's fair
and tolerant attitude was proven by several of his policies during his tenure as President of Indonesia
for the 1999-2001 period
During his tenure as president, Gus Dur always defended the rights of minorities. In the era of
his leadership, Gus Dur restored the rights of Confucians who got discrimination. Through Presidential
Decree No. 6 , 2000 gave permission for Chinese people to convey culture, religion, and customs
openly. Through this Presidential Decree, Confucianism is recognized as the official religion in
Indonesia. In addition, in overcoming every problem, Gus Dur applied an accommodative way, not
through violence.
Various policies carried out by Gus Dur showed that he always developed the spirit of Bhineka
Tunggal Ika in the life of the nation and state. Not only that, the spirit of Bhineka Tunggal Ika was
carried out by developing an attitude of mutual respect and respect in the midst of socio-cultural
differences, such as religion, ethnicity, and race. Therefore, every citizen should be able to emulate Gus
Dur's attitude by developing the spirit of Bhineka Tunggal Ika in everyday life. The spirit of Bhineka
Tunggal Ika is able to create a harmonious, peaceful and peaceful life for the Indonesian people.
