Let us think and reflect

Answer the following questions:

1. what is the difference between sanitation and sterilization?

2. How often does a beautician sanitize her hands?

3. How can you keep metal tools/implements clean after being sterilized?

4. How should waste materials be disposed of? How about contaminated

wastes?

5. Why is it important to observe safety rules in the salon?

Let us learn

Check the condition of tools and equipment

It is essential to assemble, sanitize, and sterilize all the necessary items
before starting any nail care activity. Sanitation is the application of measures
to promote public health and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The
observance of safety rules in the salon industry can help prevent accidents
and injury to anyone in the salon.

Definitions

Sterilization is the process of destroying all living micro-organisms.

Sanitization is the process of destroying some, but not all, micro-organisms.

Sterilization and sanitization techniques in the beauty salon involve physical

agents like heat and radiation; and chemical agents like antiseptics and vapor
fumigants.

Difference between disinfectant and antiseptic

A disinfectant is a substance used to control micro-organisms on non-living

surfaces such as tools, equipment, and furniture/ fixtures.

Antiseptic is an agent that prevents the multiplication of micro-organisms.

Since it is milder than a disinfectant, it can be used directly on the skin.

Preparation of Equipment to be sanitized

a. Read directions on disinfectant.
b. Measure and mix disinfectant as directed.
c. Saturate a cleaning cloth with disinfectant solution and wipe the entire
surface area of equipment.
d. Wipe the surface with a paper towel to dry it.
e. Dispose of sanitizing solution and used towels.

Preparation of Metals Implements for Sterilization

a. Soak the tools/ implements in hot, soapy water solution to remove any
debris and oil residue. Rinse them thoroughly.
b. Place the tools/implements in a 70% to 90% alcohol solution for 20
minutes.
c. Remove the tools/implements from the solution, wipe them dry, and place
them into a dry sterilizer.

Preparation of the Sanitizing Jar

a. Cleanse the sanitizing jar with disinfectant and wipe it dry.

b. Place a thin layer of sterile cotton at the bottom of the jar.
c. Remove implements from wet or dry sanitizer and place them into the jar
handles, except for metal nail files.
b. Fill a jar with 70% to 90% alcohol solution to cover cutting edges and tips
of orangewood sticks

Keep in mind to sanitize or sterilize all tools/implements to prevent

possible diseases. All materials are neatly organized on the trolley. All
beauticians should maintain a high standard of personal hygiene. Wherever
possible, use disposable products.

Ensure that the client's safety and comfort are ensured by using tools
and equipment in good condition and provide the customer with appropriate
personal protective clothing.

Your goal is to give the highest professional nail care service to each
client. Thus, check the tools and equipment thoroughly to identify those that
function efficiently and those that are not; Functional tools and equipment
are stored safely following salon requirements and local health regulations.
Segregate and label properly non-functional or faulty tools and equipment
either for repair or for discarding.

Do the following protocols after every working session:

a. Clean and sanitize tools made of plastic in preparation for the next patron.
b. Discard empty bottles and containers in a covered trash bin.
c. Store, arrange, and label correctly used treatment products and other
chemicals in the cabinet.
d. Sanitize Finger bowls before the use of every client.
e. Flush and circulate the liquid through the hand and foot spa machines
with a solution of about 5% bleach for at least 10 minutes.
f. Leave the solution in hand and foot spa machines overnight or at least 5-
10 hours before draining to sanitized thoroughly.
g. Wipe with disinfectant, the tabletops and door handle, and the floor should
be mopped with disinfectant as well.
h. Sterilize the metal tools and instruments following proper sterilization
techniques. After the process, store in a dry cabinet until needed.
i. Do not reuse tools/implements made of porous materials such as nail files,
buffers, nail brushes, and wood products like orangewood sticks that can
easily harbor bacteria and cannot be sterilized.
j. Dispose of properly waste materials in an enclosed waste bin fitted with a
polythene bag. The bin should be sanitized with disinfectant regularly in a
well-ventilated area. Remember to wear protective gloves while doing this.
k. Contaminated wastes should be disposed of as recommended by the local
authority.
l. Repair immediately or dispose of correctly any low conditioned tool or
equipment so as not to pose a danger to the clients and beauticians.
