1. When the verb ends in “e” – when adding “ed” we shall delete the final “e” of the
verb.
EX: to live = liv + ed = lived
2. When the verb ends in “y” and the verb has 1 or two syllables and a vowel exists in
the front of “y”, the “y” will not change, and the “ed” wil be added after it.
EX: to play = play + ed = played
To enjoy = enjoy+ed = enjoyed
3. When the verb ends in “y”, but in front of the “y” there is NOT a vowel, the “y”
changes into “i” and after that you add “ed”.
Ex: to study = studi + ed = studied
To cry = cri + ed = cried
4. When the verb is only 1 syllable long, and it is constructed on the scheme C-V-C
(consonant – vowel - consonant), the last consonant will be doubled when you add
“ed”
EX: to stop = stop + ed = stopped
To plan = plan + ed = planned
