Narrative Report on School Learning Action Cell via Zoom

Session 5: Teaching Strategies Responsive to Learners with Learning Disabilities

The session was started with a Nationalistic song thru audio visual presentation,
followed by a prayer. Then, checking of attendance was performed by respective school
heads, Ma’am Mary Joy K. Mercader and Ma’am Marelin Lubis since this session was
combined of two schools, CMPMS and TMKMS, Welcome remarks was graced by Mrs.
Marelin V. Lubis, Principal II of TMKMS. It was followed the introduction of LAC
Resource Person for the day, which was Mrs. Maria Fe Bautista was conducted by Mrs.
Kristyl Denise P. Mendoza, a teacher from CMPMS.
Teaching strategies responsive to learners with learning disabilities was the topic for
todays’ session. Mrs. Maria Fe Bautista started her session through sharing time. She
presented a situation that asked what would be the teachers’ response that correspond in it.
She asked the two school heads to have a representative to share their thoughts and
experiences.
The speaker showed expertise and mastery of her topic. She clearly explained each of
the strategies for each learning disabilities. Sighting examples and situation for each strategy
made the participants fully understand and engaged in the discussion.
Some of the highlights we got from this session, it is important for the child to feel
accepted and respected with his or her learning disability, build a rapport and mutual trust to
the learners, appropriate learning environment must be provided. Ma’am Bautista also
tackled about how we can accommodate learners with learning disabilities that were meant to
provide equal and ready access the task. Some of these accommodations were creating
positive learning environment that focus on students’ strength, appeal to multiple senses,
organize information visually, use chunking technique. She ended her topic asking the
participants to have a reflection as an assignment about her topic.
This session came a realization that we should be more mindful to thoughts and
feeling of every learner especially those with learning disabilities. That we, as teachers,
should be considerate, heartful, compassionate and appreciative of the child’s contribution
and effort in the learning process. In such gesture, we can create a positive learning despite
the distance.
