Frequency and voltage control of AC generator.

Objective:
The objectives of this experiment:

 To control the frequency and the voltage generated by the AC generators.

 Phase relationships between the generated voltages in the various armature windings.
 Understand the operation of a synchronous generator.

Apparatus:

 Motor.
 Connecting wires.
 Voltage supply.
 Tachometer.
 DMM

Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:
 Set the field excitation.
 Prime mover speed knob at fully zero position(induction motor).
 Switch on the main supply.
 The prime mover Use the speed control knob of the prime over to increase the speed to
1500RPM.
 Use the volt meter and frequency meter to measure the out-put voltage and frequency of
the generator. Terminal out-put of generator L1, L2, L3 and DC voltmeter ampere for DC
field excitation.
 Increase the excitation control and note the change in generator terminal voltage Measure
the frequency out-put voltage, excitation current.
 Increase the speed of prime mover at 1800 rev/min and measurement data.
 Reduce the speed to back 1500 rev/min and switch of the prime mover off.
 The prime mover is coupled to the shaft of the alternator.  When the prime mover rotates
the shaft of the alternator, the magnetic flux will be changing.
 The change of the flux generates an emf in the armature windings according to Faraday’s
Law.  The voltage generated depends on this flux and, therefore, on the field current.
 If the number of poles is P, then the frequency of the generated voltages in the stator
depends on the speed:
N(rpm)=120f/P

Calculation:

IF Vf Vt
Ppm VT P=120/rpm
