Observation of Teaching-Learning in Actual School Environment

FIELD STUDY 1- Learning Episode 1 “The School Environment”
I. SPARK Your Interest
This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for student to examine and reflect on a school
environment that promotes learning and development.
II. TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome
At the end of this Episode 1, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school
environment that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1).
III. REVISIT the Learning Essential
1. A physical environment conductive for learning is one that has consistent practices that:
 keep the school safe, clean, orderly, and free from distraction;
 maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 address the physical, social, and psychological needs of the students.
2. Display boards can be powerful in communication information about the learning
environment. They help in building and establishing the school culture. These boards
become one way for everyone to learn about the vision-mission, goals, and values that the
school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display boards has four general purpose:
 Decorative- They offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set the social
and psychological atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational- They encourage students to perform better and have greater confidence.
An example would be display of students’ outputs that show that each output is
recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help celebrate the learners’ growth and
progress.
 Informational-They are use as strategy to readily disseminate information.
 Instructional- They get students to respond and participate through interactive displays.
They get students to think about and communicate their learning.
4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays include effective communication,
attractiveness, balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness, and durability.

IV. OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

Activity 1.1 “ Exploring the School Campus”

To realize the Intended Learning Outcome, work my way through these steps:
1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support learning areas in the campus, then in the
classroom.
2. Observe and use the checklist as you move around the school premises.
3. Analyze your gathered data about the school environment.
4. Reflect on the characteristics of a school environment that promotes learning.
5. Present your idea of a good school environment through any of these:
a) Descriptive paragraph b) Photo essay
c) Sketch or drawing d) Poem, song or rap

V. OBSERVE
As you move around the campus, observation forms are provided for you to document
your observations. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet before proceeding to the
school site. A good understanding of the activities and tasks to be accomplished in the
activity sheets will yield better learning results.

ANALYZE

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the student
going to school? What are your conclusion?
“ The breaking down of informational material into their components parts, examining such
information to develop divergent conclusions by identifying motives or causes, making
references, and/or finding evidence to support generalizations. It involves:

>Seeing patterns , >organizational parts, >recognition of hiding meanings, >identification of

components, > Question Cues: analyze, separate, order, explain, connect, classify, arrange,
divide, compare, select, explain, infer (Bloom’s Taxonomy)”
The condition of every building and the school environment had really affect the pupils
learning development. The pupils cannot concentrate into their classes if their school
environment does not suit to their learning adaptability. Thus, in educating the students, we
should have to consider a best environment for them.

How does this relate to your knowledge of the child and adolescent development/ How does this
relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?

It was said that the environment of a child affects a lot to his development. When taking
into this kind of stage, this is the very crucial level on which what the child experiences be can
bore within his life. What environment he experiences might be remained handled within his
existence.
REFLECT

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observe? Why ? Why not?

Yes. The school had indeed good facilities, and if it happened that the school has not, I
will not change my decision because student that schooling in a public schools need more
attention to guide their educational experiences. I have seen that it is hard for them to study on
that kind of environment but their perseverance to learn had catch my attention so much.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

The school campus that is conducive for learning must have a complete, good and
operating facilities. There must have also no pollution, clean and well-organized amenities
which can able to enhance students learning process without any hindrances from its
environment.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

A conducive for learning classroom must be clean, free from pollution, properly
ventilated and has a complete facilities. The ideal classroom is a positive place where a student
can come to work toward specific goals set before them in the class objectives. The teacher is
to be positive, organized, outgoing, confident, and compassionate.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

Being a role model teacher not only at the school but in the society. The classroom must
be a place where students can come and enjoy their class time and learn the information being
taught. My classroom management style would be very strict and I would expect the best from
each and every student. My classroom motto would be as follows: Be respectful, be
responsible, be prepared, and give 110% and then some. My mother worked as a Elementary
School Principal for 28 years. I was never allowed to show any elder any disrespect, to be
irresponsible, to be unprepared, or to give less that 100% of myself.

5. Write your additional learning and insight here.

Learning can be motivated. Thus, the environment of the school campus has an
important role in motivating the students learning. How could any student study well if their
rooms are very hot and sometimes they cannot breath conditionally ?Then, it is my opinion to
say that the learner’s environment can affect the learner’s learning development.

Activity 1.2 Observing bulletin board display

Resource Teacher:Fidela M. Membreve Teacher’s Signature:

School:Cogon Norte Elementary School
Grade/Year Level:Grade 3 Subject Area:Filipino Date:October 6, 2021

The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin board, is one of the
most readily available and versatile learning resources.
To achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through these steps: 1.
Examine for bulletin board displays. Include samples of those found at the entrance, lobby,
hallways, and classrooms 2. Pick one and evaluate the display. 3 Propose enhancements to
make the display more effective.

VII. OBSERVE
As you look and examine board display, use the observation guide and forms provided for
you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAYS

Read the following carefully before you observe.
1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board display do you see?
 As I observe there are only 2 display boards.
2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where target viewers can see them?
 The board display found at the side of Principal’s Office as when you entered the school
campus the pupils or visitors will see it first.
3. What are the display about? What key messages do they convey? What images and colors do
you see? How are the pieces of information and images arranged?
 The display board is all about the awareness of COVID - 19 and for Brigada Eskwela “Bayanihan
para sa Paaralan”. I can see that the images are good and intended for pupils that can catch to
their attention. The colors are very colorful and the information and images are properly
arranged.
4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are border used?
 They used tarpaulin and there are no borders used.
5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar inconsistencies and the like)
 There are none.
6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?
 Yes.
7. Think about what got your attention. What did it gt your attention?
 The image structure because it is very amusing to see it even kid and old people will like to
view it because of the images and the colors combined it.
8. Take a photos of the display boards ( if allowed).

Based on the question on the observation guide write your observation report:
Observation REPORT
( You may paste pictures of the Board display here.)

As I’ve entered the school campus, the first thing that I can see is the tarpaulin
about COVID-19 and Brigada Skwela “Bayanihan para sa Paaralan”. The texts size
they used is very big that most viewers in far away distance can still read it. The
images they used are suited for the viewers especially for children because they
can make the children who see it widen their imagination when seeing the images
posted. The text color they used also is very appropriate to the board display and it
is not messy or confusing to see. The message they convey is very clear and
understandable, there are no grammatical errors and misspelled words on it.

From among the board displays that you saw, pick the one that you got most interested
in. Evaluate it using evaluation from below.

VIII. ANALYZE
What do you think was the purpose of the board display?
The purpose of the board display is to catch the viewer's attention and
explain what was performed and what was learned.

Did the board display design reflect the likes/interest of its target audience? Why? Why not?
Yes, because it is for the awareness of the viewer’s who will see and read it.

Was the language clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?
The language used in the board display are very clear and simple
because the audience and viewers are the elementary pupils for them to understand it
easily.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

Yes, because it can help the viewers to gain some information and
awareness of what the board display wants to convey a message.

What suggestion can you make?

The only suggestions that I can make is make some borders on the board
display in order for the viewers to be more attractive and engaging. Give also quotes and
important thing to do in order to stay safe and healthy in living.

Based on your suggestion, propose an enhance version of the display board. Use the form
below.

My Proposed Board Display

Theme:
COVID-19 PANDEMIC AWARENESS
Board title:
STAY SAFE DURING COVID-19
Rationale:
(Purpose)

This board will encourage the pupils to stay safe at home and follow safety protocols. The pupils
will also learn how to wear mask and how to reduce risk from COVID-19.
Objectives:

 The learners will able to know how to properly wear face masks.
 The learners will be able to follow safety protocols.
 The learners will be able how to reduce risk from COVID-19.
Best features of my proposed bulletin enhancement:

 Photos about how to properly wear face masks.

 Photos about how to reduce risk from COVID-19.
 Engaging quotes about COVID-19.

Content Resources ( Name each needed resources and give each brief description):

 Wearing a face mask will help prevent the spread of infection and prevent the individual
from contracting any airborne infectious germs. When someone coughs, talks, sneezes
they could release germs into the air that may infect others nearby. Face masks are part of
an infection control strategy to eliminate cross-contamination. Avoid crowds and close
contact.
 Follow safety protocols especially when you are in public places. Wear a properly fitted
mask when physical distancing is not possible and in poorly ventilated settings. Clean your
hands frequently with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. Cover your mouth and
nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Materials for aesthetic enhancement:

 Art paper
 Pictures
 Clip-arts
 Glue
 Printer
 Wallpaper
 Art materials

IX. REFLECT
1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to able to come up with effective board
display. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.

The skills that a teacher need to create an effective board display could
include:
 Creativity - Instructional content can be dry and boring in a classroom setting. Creative
teacher tries to present concepts and content in an interesting way.
 Visual Skills - Teachers are somewhat like interior designers; they must be able to visualize
the presentation and impact they want create, then apply those to the display.
 Organizational Skills - This goes with #2, but organization includes comparing and
contrasting, grouping and arranging content in a meaningful way.
 Communication - Teachers know that words combined with visual content can often
communicate more than words alone. As well, the teacher must be a good communicator.
 Imaginative- In a way that the teacher may able to look for a unique ways or ideas in order
to come up with an effective display board.

2. Which of the skills you named in #1 do you already have? Recall your past experience in
making board displays. How do you practice these skills?

The skills that I have in #1 is Imaginative. I am good at making things beautiful

and creative. In this way I am good at being creative in making board display. As I’ve
recalled my past experience in making board display, I am not that very good at making it. It
needs more practice and awareness what I’ve lacked in order for the board display be more
attractive.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on how you can
improve on or acquire these skills.
The skills that I still need to develop is Organization Skills and Communication.
Yes, I am good at creativity but it turns bad because of my organization skills. I am also not
that good in communication because of my vocabulary and I also tend to forgot what the
best word to say. In order to improve these skills, I will try to ask my friends or expert that
good in organizing what are their tips to have an organizational skills.
In order to develop my communication skills, I will read vocabulary words and I
need to practice my communication skills especially when there are many people.
