The person to your left will ask you where you are from. Answer, then ask the person to
your right. Continue until you have reached the last person. The teacher will then ask each
student where their neighbor is from.

DRILL 2: LUNAR/SOLAR LETTERS ‫ حروف مشسية وقمرية‬:‫التمرين الثاين‬


When ‫ ال‬is added to the beginning of a word, there are cases in which the ‫ ل‬is

pronounced and cases in which it is skipped. When the ‫ ل‬is skipped, the proceeding letter
is pronounced as though it has a shadda on it.

The ‫ ل‬is pronounced if it is followed by one of the ‫( ُح ُروف قَ َمريَّة‬e.g. ‫)الْ َق َم ُر‬

DRILL 3: TRANSFORMATION DRILLS ‫ التحويل‬:‫التمرين الثالث‬
‫ – ايء النسبة‬The ‫ ي‬of Attribution
 ‫ َايءُ النِ ْسبَ ِة‬can be used to convert a noun to an adjective (e.g. America → American).
 It is added to the end of the word. The ‫ ي‬always gets a shadda, and the letter
before the ‫ ي‬always gets a kasra.
 The feminine version gets a ‫ اتء مربوطة‬e.g. ‫بِْنت عَِراقِيَّة‬

A number of Bayyinah students travelled to Mecca for ‘Umra. During their stay in Mecca, they saw old
Islamic monuments, including Al-Masjid Al-Haraam, the Mountain of Light, and masjid of Hudaybiyah.
When they returned to the institute, one of the teachers asked them:

Teacher: What did you like about Mecca?

Fatima: We liked Al-Masjid Al-Haraam.

Teacher: What did you see at Al-Masjid Al-Haraam?

Khadijah: At Al-Majid Al-Haraam we saw the Black Stone, the Well of Zamzam, As-Safaa, Al-Marwa, and
Maqaam Ibrahim, and other monuments as well.

Teacher: Did you climb the Mountain of Light?

Muhammad: Yes, we climbed the Mountain of Light and saw Ghaar Hiraa’!

Ayman: Yes, and we saw the entire city from the peak of the mountain. The view there is very beautiful.

Imaad: Climbing the mountain is very frightening, but alhamdulillah, my brother Ayman helped me.

Teacher: Good job, Ayman, this is an observance of Allah’s words, “Surely, the believers are nothing but
brothers.”

Shaykh Abdul Nasir Jangda was born in Dallas and raised in Arlington. In his youth, Shaykh Abdul Nasir
moved to Karachi in Pakistan to memorize the Quran, and then he completed his studies of the Islamic
sciences and sharia at a university in Karachi. After completing his studies, Shaykh Abdul Nasir returned to
Dallas in order to serve the Muslim community in America, and he taught the youth in his old
neighborhood in Colleyville Masjid.

He then started a school for learning the Islamic sciences. It is called “Qalam Institute”. Shaykh Abdul
Nasir wants to prepare du’aat (callers) for the Muslim society in the West, especially in America. Some
students from Bayyinah Institute continue their Islamic studies at Qalam Institute every year.

‫حممد‪ :‬إنّه مريض‪ ،‬قال ابألمس إ ّن رأسه يؤمله‪ .‬كيف نقول أمل يف الرأس ابلعربية؟‬
‫عمر أن يشرتي الدواء من الصيدلية‪.‬‬
‫حامد‪ :‬نقول "صداع"‪ .‬على َ‬
‫حممد‪ :‬نعم‪ ،‬سأشرتي له الدواء إن شاء هللا‪ ،‬وأدعو هللا أن يشفيه‪.‬‬
‫حامد‪ :‬آمني!‬
Muhammad: Where is brother Abdul-Ghaffar?

Hamid: I heard from his brother that he is in the hospital.

Muhammad: Why?

Hamid: His arm was broken.

Muhammad: Really? How?

Hamid: He was vacuuming his house and he fell.

Muhammad: May Allah cure him. Which hospital is he at?

Hamid: He is at the general hospital in Dallas. The doctor is examining him and treating him.

Muhammad: I will visit him inshaAllah, in accordance with the hadith of the Prophet (SAW): “The right of
a Muslim over another Muslim (is): that he visits him if he falls ill.”

Hamid: Well done. And where is your colleague, Omar?

Muhammad: He is sick. He said yesterday that his head was hurting. How do we say “headache” in
Arabic?

Hamid: We say ‫صداع‬. Omar needs to buy medicine from the pharmacy.

Muhammad: Yes, I will buy him some medicine, inshaAllah, and I pray that Allah cures him.

Wasim: Yes, but I do not prefer going there. I was hospitalized because of it.

Ali: Really?! What happened?

Wasim: A cup was broken, and the pieces of glass were not swept up, so one of them got lodged in my
foot.

Ali: How is your foot now? Has it gotten better? Do you want to go to another restaurant?

Wasim: Yes, alhamdullilah, my foot is better. This happened a year ago. Let us go to another restaurant.

- All the doors of the main hall are closed at eight o’clock sharp. I woke up late today. When I approached
the hall, all the doors had been closed.

- Today, we heard that the new book was printed two days before the school year started.

- Sheikh Muhammad moved from New York to our city. He visited the institute and taught us many new
beneficial things.

- We were reminded today not to speak while Quran is being recited.

- Ustadh told us many stories, so we did not complete the lesson. It was said that we would complete it
tomorrow.

- It snowed a lot this morning, so we did not go to the institute. It seems as though we will not compete
yesterday’s lesson today.

Shaykh Abul-Hasan Al-Nadawi is a very famous scholar. He attended the University of Nadwat Al-
Ulamaa’ in the city of Lucknow in India, and there he studied the Islamic sciences. After completing his
studies, he was appointed as a teacher at the same university, where he taught tafsir, hadith, Arabic
literature, history, and logic.

He published many books. These books were translated from Arabic and Urdu into numerous
languages. His books are read in many schools and universities in the Islamic world and the Arab world.
The Shaykh wrote a series of books called “Stories of the Prophets,” and it is from among his most famous
publications. At first, he wrote these books in order to teach his grandchildren Arabic, but they are now
used all over the world for Arabic education and education in Quranic styles for children and non-native
speakers.
