Floods in Pakistan
The summer of 2010 produced Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years. The number
of people affected, who need food, shelter and clothing to face a harsh Pakistani winter,
is 20 million. Flooding began on July 22, 2010, in the area of Baluchistan. The swollen
waters then poured across in the northwest before flowing south into Punjab and Sind.
Estimates of death toll of the floods range from 1,300 to 1,600.
Even as Pakistani and international relief officials scrambled to save people and
property, they despaired that the nation’ worst natural calamity had ruined just about
every physical strand that knit the country together – roads, bridges, schools, health
clinics, electricity and communication.
The flooding, which began with the arrival of the annual monsoons, eventually
affected about one-fifth of the country – nearly 62,000 square miles – or an area larger
than England.
Six weeks after the floods began, as rivers continued to devour villages and
farmland in the southern province of Sindh, aid workers warned of a triple threat loss of
crops, loss of seed for the next planting season and loss of a daily income. There was
widespread worry that the disaster will destabilize the country and aggravate its
problems.
Poorly handled relief efforts have added to the distrust that many Pakistanis
already feel for their political leaders, while the armed forces have performed rescue and
relief missions along the length of the flooded areas.

The man next went to a house where a wedding was taking place. There he dug a
huge hole. This made the people angry and they chased him away. When he returned
home, his father told him that if he had beaten a drum and danced instead, the people
there would have bought salt from him.
Then, he went to a village where there happened to be a fire. Rushing to the
place, he started drumming and dancing, only to be thrown out by the people. His father
told him that he should have poured water on the fire instead, if he wanted to sell salt
there.
In the next place he went to, a couple were fighting with each other. The foolish
man poured a bucketful of water on them, again to be chased away. His father later told
him that he should have tried to settle the quarrel, in which case they would have bought
salt from him.
In the final event, the man saw two bulls fighting with each other. He stepped in
to stop the fight and was gored to death by angry bulls.

Emma’s Daily Routine
Hi! My name is Emma. I’m ten years old and I’m English. I live with my family in
Brighton in the south of England. My day usually starts quite early. I always get up at
7.30 on weekdays, but at the weekends I sleep an hour and a half longer. When I get up, I
go to the bathroom first. I wash my face to wake me up, brush my teeth and then I have a
shower. After that I comb my hair and get dressed. I usually wear casual clothes, mainly
jeans, shorts, T-shirts and trainers.
I always have breakfast with my mum and my little brother, Tommy. My
dad never has breakfast with us because he starts work early on weekdays. I usually have

a bowl of corn flakes with hot milk and toast with marmalade. Before I go to school, I
have to walk our dog, Leo.
I usually walk to school because I don’t live very far. Classes start at 8.30. I
like Maths best but I’m also good at Science and English. I have two breaks, at 11 and at
1 o’clock. I eat a sandwich and drink orange juice. I also play with my classmates in the
playground. School finishes at 3.30 and my dad picks me up and we come back home by
car. Then we have lunch together.
After lunch I play with my brother for a while and then I do my homework and
study. Twice a week I have a basketball practice. I love doing sports.
Before dinner I sometimes meet my friends or watch a TV quiz. I seldom play
computer game, I simply find them boring. We have dinner at 7.30 and I often set the
table. After dinner I read a book or surf the Internet for a while.
At 9.30 I go to the bathroom to have a shower, brush my teeth and put on my
nightdress. Before I go to sleep I listen to music on my MP3 player because it makes me
feel relaxed.
