PREFACE

With all the praise and thanks to God the Almighty, who has given His love and
mercy so that English Handout can finish well. On this occasion, we would like to thank
profusely to all those who have helped us in completing the writing of this handout.

English for SMK, which is designed, based on the basic competencies is written
to meet with the need of sources for teaching and learning English in Vocational
Schools.

This book, which may require about 148 hours, is intended for the first level (novice) of
Vocational School students to improve their oral as well as written performance but for
this time this handout just contains for online learning. To minimize the learning lesson.
This book aims:

1. to practice and develop the four language skill

2. to develop the knowledge, skill and understanding required by students to
become professional employees or entrepreneurs.
3. To meet students’ need to communicate in English accurately, fluently,
appropriately and confidently in many useful situations in the work places as well
as in society.

This handout contains three units is divided into sections. In each section there
are a lot of pair work, group work and whole class activities, which provide more
personal practice of the new learning points and increase the opportunity for individual
student practice. The writer realizes that this book is not perfect, therefore constructive
criticism and suggestions are very welcome. Finally, I hope that the writing of this
Handout can be useful for readers.

Warm regards,

The writer

Floods in Pakistan
The summer of 2010 produced Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years. The number
of people affected, who need food, shelter and clothing to face a harsh Pakistani winter,
is 20 million. Flooding began on July 22, 2010, in the area of Baluchistan. The swollen
waters then poured across in the northwest before flowing south into Punjab and Sind.
Estimates of death toll of the floods range from 1,300 to 1,600.
Even as Pakistani and international relief officials scrambled to save people and
property, they despaired that the nation’ worst natural calamity had ruined just about
every physical strand that knit the country together – roads, bridges, schools, health
clinics, electricity and communication.
The flooding, which began with the arrival of the annual monsoons, eventually
affected about one-fifth of the country – nearly 62,000 square miles – or an area larger
than England.

Six weeks after the floods began, as rivers continued to devour villages and
farmland in the southern province of Sindh, aid workers warned of a triple threat loss of
crops, loss of seed for the next planting season and loss of a daily income. There was
widespread worry that the disaster will destabilize the country and aggravate its
problems.
Poorly handled relief efforts have added to the distrust that many Pakistanis
already feel for their political leaders, while the armed forces have performed rescue and
relief missions along the length of the flooded areas.

1. What happened in Pakistan in 2010?

A. the flood came as bad as usual
B. international officials save the people from war
C. The Pakistani sold food, houses and clothing
D. Pakistan was suffered from the very bad flooding
2. Who were the victims of the flood?
A. the international relief officials
B. aid workers
C. the people of Pakistan
D. the political leaders
3. How many areas were attacked by the flood?
A. 3 areas

A stupid man was sent by his father to sell salt. He first went to a
mining area but nobody there wanted his salt. When he returned home,
his father told him that if he had helped the miners to dig, they would
have bought his salt.

The man next went to a house where a wedding was taking place. There he dug a
huge hole. This made the people angry and they chased him away. When he returned
home, his father told him that if he had beaten a drum and danced instead, the people
there would have bought salt from him.
Then, he went to a village where there happened to be a fire. Rushing to the
place, he started drumming and dancing, only to be thrown out by the people. His father
told him that he should have poured water on the fire instead, if he wanted to sell salt
there.
In the next place he went to, a couple were fighting with each other. The foolish
man poured a bucketful of water on them, again to be chased away. His father later told
him that he should have tried to settle the quarrel, in which case they would have bought
salt from him.
In the final event, the man saw two bulls fighting with each other. He stepped in
to stop the fight and was gored to death by angry bulls.

playground. School finishes at 3.30 and my dad picks me up and we come back home by
car. Then we have lunch together.
After lunch I play with my brother for a while and then I do my homework and
study. Twice a week I have a basketball practice. I love doing sports.
Before dinner I sometimes meet my friends or watch a TV quiz. I seldom play
computer game, I simply find them boring.  We have dinner at 7.30 and I often set the
table. After dinner I read a book or surf the Internet for a while.
At 9.30 I go to the bathroom to have a shower, brush my teeth and put on my
nightdress. Before I go to sleep I listen to music on my MP3 player because it makes me
feel relaxed.
