ABSTRACT:-

Project-based learning (PBL) is a student-centred approach in which students learn by solving

real-life problems in a teamwork environment. This study aims to compare and analyze students'
perceptions of the use of PBL in different undergraduate- and graduate-level civil
engineering courses.

In our P.B.L project we have given the task to study and research on “Green technology
application in construction” with all related information and required analysis and theories.
Engineering education system remains dominated by the chalk and talk technique despite the
large body of education research that demonstrates its ineffectiveness. During our P.B.L project
we have broken these barriers and we applied our theoretical knowledge practically and making
our environment better and improved.

Objective of Green buildings:-

The objective of green building concept is to develop buildings which

use the natural resources to the minimal at the time of construction as
well as operation. Green buildings emphasize on the resource usage
efficiency and also press upon the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and
Recycle:

To ensure minimum negative impact on the environment by the

construction and operation of a building.

Green technology makes buildings more energy-efficient and

sustainable, so they have a lower carbon footprint and a reduced
impact on the environment. Builders, building owners, and tenants
all realize considerable benefits from the application of green
construction technology.

30% to 40% of a commercial building is typically unoccupied at any

given time. Green building technology makes use of motion
detectors, RFID scanners, access card readers, and other sensors
to monitor the occupancy status of building sectors.
Green Building Regulations And Rating System:-

Green building laws and codes in our country are voluntary. till date, india
does not have an effective and comprehensive green building code. the
united states green building council established leed, which stands for
leadership in energy and environmental design. today, leed is an
internationally recognized green building certification system, which provides
third-party verification for a building or community designed and built using
strategies intended to improve performance in metrics, such as energy
saving, water efficiency, reduced co2 emissions, improved indoor
environmental quality, stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their
impacts. the green indicators of leed have been adopted by as many as 57
countries, and are considered benchmarks. LEED india sets down
standards that have been customised according to indian conditions, in terms
of the design, construction and operation of buildings for environment-
friendly performance.

Its rating system is amended regularly to address not only the Indian
environmental and climatic conditions but also the sustainability issues of
buildings. site development, water resource utilization, energy, material
selection and indoor environment are the key areas focused upon while
amending the system. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is
attempting to indigenize LEED according to the environmental conditions
prevalent in India. The IGBC Green Homes rating is said to
be the first rating programme created exclusively for Indian homes by the
Council. It defines green buildings as buildings which use less water,
optimise energy efficiency, conserve natural resources, generate less waste
and provide healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to conventional
buildings.
The Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Airconditioning
Engineers (ISHRAE), established 30 years ago on the lines of the American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Airconditioning, offers guidance in the art
and science of ventilation, heating, refrigeration and airconditioning.
It has joined hands with IGBC to act as a guide for energy- efficient
airconditioning.

GRIHA, an acronym for Green Rat- ing for Integrated Habitat Assessment, is
now the National Rating System of India. Conceived by TERI (The Energy
and Resources Institute), and devel- oped jointly with the Ministry of New
and Renewable Energy, Government of India, GRIHA is a green building
design evaluation system. It provides basic prerequisites for green buildings
in terms of the following :
a) climate-based layouts and designs to minimise energy consumption
b) waste water treatment and recycling with zero external discharge
c) use of fly ash blocks for walls and slabs to maximise use of recycled
material
d) maximum use of natural lighting and optimum indoor air quality

Green Building Rating System:-

❖ A green building rating system is an evaluation tool that measures

environmental performance of a building through its life cycle.
❖ Comprises of a set of criteria covering various parameters related to
design, construction and operation of a green building
❖ Each criterion has pre-assigned points and sets performance
benchmarks and goals that are largely quantifiable.
❖ A project is awarded points once it fulfills the rating criteria. The
points are added up and the final rating of a project is decided.
National Rating System of India.:-

It evaluates environmental performance of buildings holistically over

its entire lifecycle, thereby providing a definitive standards for what
constitute a green building.

GRIHA has been conceived by TERI and developed jointly with the
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. It is a
green building 'design evaluation system', and is suitable for all kinds
of buildings in different climatic zones of the country.

ADARSH, Association for Development and Research of Sustainable

Habitats founded jointly by TERI (The Energy and Resources
Institute, New Delhi) and MNRE (Ministry of New and Renewable
Energy, Government of India) along with a handful of experts in the
sustainability of built environment from across the country.

About the Project:

The facility houses laboratories, seminar rooms, and

discussion rooms for various disciplines of environmental
sciences. Given the function of the building, it was decided that
it should be designed in an environment friendly manner

This facility is meant to focus on research in various areas of

environment that is air, water and the impact of human
interference with the objective of solving problems. The
location of building was selected between nursery and
aerospace building. There are several features like eco
friendly products in construction, energy efficient features,
power saving sensors, use of non-conventional energy
sources such as the solar, passive cooling techniques and
proper landscape are the basic features of the building. The
building is designed to be environment friendly.

Key Highlights

▪ The building is fully complied with the ECBC (Energy

Conservation Building Code).
▪ Sustainable site planning has been integrated to
maintain favorable micro climate.
▪ The architectural design has been optimized as per
climate and sun path analysis.
▪ Energy efficient artificial lighting design and daylight integration.
▪ Energy efficient air conditioning design with controls
integrated to reduce annual energy consumption.
▪ Passive strategies such as an earth air tunnel incorporated
in the HVAC design to reduce the cooling load.

allowing daylight into the interiors. The building envelope was
chosen such that it meets the ECBC compliance. The project
prime focus was to reduce the energy consumption with no
compromise to occupants' thermal comfort
