Things I love and hate

This week we talk to guitarist Rick West about music, playing live, writing songs – and pizza!

First of all, Rick, what music do
you like?
I love most types of music,
especially rock and jazz. I don’t
often listen to classical music, but
I have some classical CDs that I
like, you know, Beethoven and
because I enjoy watching the
audience dancing and having a
good time. It’s the best feeling in
the world.
You write beautiful songs, but do
you enjoy writing?
in my hotel room. But I really love
having breakfast in hotels. I always
have croissants, eggs, toast and
good coffee. Mmmm … wonderful!

Mozart and things like that. But I
don’t really like opera – probably
because I don’t understand it!
I enjoy a lot of new music too,
particularly guitar music. But I hate
electronic dance music – I only like
music with real instruments like
guitars and drums.

Well, I like writing the music, but
it isn’t easy. And I don’t really like
writing the lyrics. Sometimes I
write and write all day and then
when I finish, I read the lyrics and
I think they’re terrible! So I start
again the next day. It can be very
frustrating.

So you never go clubbing. What else do you like doing?

No, I don’t. I prefer sitting on my
sofa at home and listening to a
jazz CD. That, for me, is a perfect
evening! I also enjoy playing the
guitar, of course – at home with
friends, in a small club or a big
rock concert. I love playing live
Well, I love cooking, but I don’t
often have time, so I usually just
cook pizza! I travel a lot, of course,
so I often eat in restaurants. But
I don’t really like eating out –
sometimes it’s nice to have a cheese
and tomato sandwich and a drink
