CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose Statement

The researcher conducted a case study (explanatory) to increase the understanding of

the researcher with regards to bamboo as a building material. Furthermore, it also

seeks to evaluate the perspective or understanding of the respondents.

1.2 Background of the Study

Bamboo is a quickly renewable resource widely available worldwide and has

strength similar to modern building components [ CITATION Sha15 \l 1033 ].

Bamboo is a massive plant with large branches that grow in nature. When the plant is

young, the stems are termed "shoots," When the plant is old, the stems are called

"culms." The bamboo plant comprises an above-ground “culm"/stem and an

underground "rhizome" containing the plant's roots [ CITATION Sye14 \l 1033 ].

According to [ CITATION Cha13 \l 1033 ], bamboo's carbohydrate content strongly

impacts its resilience and life span. It implies that the length of the bamboo culm,

depth of the wall, harvesting period, and bamboo varieties all play a role in bamboo

durability [ CITATION Dha05 \l 1033 ]. However, as modernization has progressed,

it has almost become obsolete, especially in developed countries where concrete

materials are preferable because of their durability. Bamboo is considered a low-cost,

non-permanent material. It is a low-class material, and many modern builders refer to

it as "poor man timber" [ CITATION Nur16 \l 1033 ].

Furthermore, Angustifolia Guadua is a tropical bamboo variety common to

South and Central America frequently utilized as a building material in Colombia. Its

high rate of biomass generation, recyclability, good standard of Carbon fixation and

storage, wide width, length, and resilience are all distinguishing and desirable

characteristics that can enhance the current environment [ CITATION Arc12 \l

1033 ]. According to the research of [ CITATION Nur16 \l 1033 ], one of the

disadvantages of bamboo is susceptible to insects and fungal attacks. Bamboo is

commonly conserved in constructions using a borax hydrochloric acid utilizing a

variety of ways, including immersion, gravity or vertical drench diffusion, and

injections using a pump machine. It found that borax hydrochloric acid was efficient

in extending the life duration of Bamboo [ CITATION Pur15 \l 1033 ].

Bamboos should be thoroughly air-dried to ingest adequate additive

arrangement during pressure treatment; the technique isn't considered reasonable for

the meager walled bamboos since breaks and breakdown are probably going to create

and debilitate the strength properties of the culm. It is, this way, fundamental that

main thick-walled species be pressure-treated (Lessard, G. and Chouinard, A., 1980).

It is essential to understand how bamboo can be used as a curved building material. It

needs to analyze and understand how to preserve the material from environmental

factors and apply and employ Guadua Angustifolia bamboo in the architecture design.

The aim of this is to increase more insight into the factors of bamboo through failures

and success as building materials.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Bamboo is a material that is often regarded as being ecologically friendly.  The

purpose of this research is to learn about factors affecting the use of Guadua Angustifolia

(Iron Bamboo) as building materials into curved structures in Talomo, Davao City.

This research will address the following questions:

1. What is the profile respondents that are using for the Guadua Angustifolia (Iron Bamboo)

as building materials into curved structures in terms of;

1.1. Sex

1.2. Years of experience in the field

1.3. Current position

1. How can be Guadua Angustifolia (Iron Bamboo) will be used in terms of;

1.1. curved form

1.2. building materials

1.2.1.  scaffolding

1.2.2. walls

1.2.3. roofs

1.3.1 Research Question

These research questions guide the study:

1. According to the respondent's sex, years of experience in the field, what are

their insights/understanding into the factors of Guadua Angustifolia bamboo

as building construction in Davao City?

2. What are their perspectives or knowledge of Guadua Angustifolia bamboo

applying bamboo as scaffolding, walls, roofs?

1.4 Research Goals and Objectives

The study helps to identify the properties of bamboo as curved building material by

investigating professionals in this field to strengthen the available body of

knowledge.

To achieve this goal, the objectives of the study are as follows:

1. To increase the understanding of bamboo as be used as a curved building

material.

2. To analyze and understand how to preserve the material from environmental

factors of Guadua Angustifolia bamboo in Talomo, Davao City.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The research focuses on the factors affecting Guadua Angustifolia (Iron Bamboo) as

building materials into curved structures. The data collection will be conducted for 50

professionals in the field of Design and Engineering. This study will not cover other

problems or like in the experimental methods regarding the strength of the bamboo.

The study will be done through online questionnaires and interviews (no physical

conduct to follow the protocols during the pandemic). Through these, the researcher

will increase more insight into the factors of bamboo as building materials.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will primarily be a benefit to future researchers since the learning and

understanding will not stop. The future researchers will serve this as a guide to

continue this study or to opposite the current study. Moreover, this study will be

helpful to the aspirant's professionals in this field because this will give them

information and essential knowledge from the perspectives of the current respondents.

1.7 Acronyms and Abbreviations, Definition of Terms and Concepts

Guadua Angustifolia – A species of bamboo that is originated and found in Columbia

but as years goes by there is now Guadua Angustifolia found in the Philippines

particularly in the Northern part of Philippines.

Curved Shape Structure - an even bend addressing the typical appropriation.
