Superstition
Irrational as they may be, we all have a superstition or two, whether it’s a lucky number or an
unexplained event in our lives. Superstition also explains why many buildings do not have a 13th
floor – preferring to label it 12B on elevator button panels because of concerns about superstitious
tenants. Generally, a superstition is any belief or practice considered by non-practitioners to be
irrational or supernatural, attributed to fate or magic, perceived supernatural influence, or fear of that
which is unknown. It is commonly applied to beliefs and practices surrounding luck, amulets,
astrology, fortune telling, spirits, and certain paranormal entities, particularly the belief that future
events can be foretold by specific (apparently) unrelated prior events. Superstitions generally give us
meanings to the often random nature of luck
