Case Analysis

Executive Summary

The case talks about man (Sameer) who has been working for a company for long time and now
plans to go for an MBA and also promises the CEO, who was financing his MBA that he would
rejoin after he completes his MBA and add more value to the company’s business. But as soon as his
MBA is ended, he is offered great job with better salary paying 50 percent of his tuition fees. Now he
is in doubt whether he (Sameer) should accept the new offer and break his promise or should be loyal
and should keep his promise.
Situation Analysis
Sameer promised Mr. Baba (The CEO of the company) that if he can finance his tuition fees, then he
will return to the company (BABA) post his MBA and could take company to new height by
applying his knowledge of business studies. He has signed a contract with the company (BABA)
that - “Post his MBA, it is compulsory for him (Sameer) to work for (BABA) company for at least
three years, failing to which Sameer will have to repay the full tuition fees back to the (BABA)
company. But at the end of Sameer’s MBA he has got an offer from company which has more
lucrative salary and facilities.

Now Sameer has 2 options Either to break the promise Which he made to CEO of the company and
repay the tuition fees back to BABA and accept the offer made by Cloud skim. Or he can refuse
offer made by the new company (cloud skim) to him and keep his promise to BABA by returning
back and making the company more profitable by applying better business knowledge.

Problem Statement

Sameer (Protagonist) faces dilemma of whether he should keep his promise to the company who
has paid for his MBA tuition by returning back post MBA or should he choose growth
and luxury instead of loyalty and commitment and join the new startup company Cloud skim in
which he will be provided with better salaries and facilities.

Objective
1. To grow from a lower position to a midlevel managerial position.
2. To be in good terms with BABA.
3.To Help his colleagues earn an MBA degree and improve BABA performance with the
help of his business knowledge.
Options and Evaluation
1. Go back to BABA but demand for the salary which was offered in Cloud Skim. he
will be able to prove his loyalty to BABA while earning some benefits for himself.
Pros:
a) Sameer will be capable to keep back his promise and would not disappoint CEO of
the baba. In addition if demand of Sameer is approved, he (Sameer) will get the desired
salary.
b) He wouldn’t have to pay the tuition fees and would be able to save it.
Cons:
a) Sameer would have to give his ambition for growth and had to work in lower
positions in BABA
b) He would also not get the better pay and facilities which he can get in the new
company (Cloud Skim).

2. Choose Luxury over Loyalty. Accept the offer of Cloud skim and according to
contract made by BABA repay the tuition fees to BABA.
Pros:
a) Sameer would be offered a lucrative salary in cloud skim and would get nice
facilities compared to BABA and have a higher growth potential.
b) Sameer doesn't even have to pay for the tuition out of his pocket, because the
company will do it for him.
c) Since It’s a startup (CLOUDSKIM), By using his (Sameer’s)knowledge to develop
the business, he can achieve a higher position in the company in a shorter span of time.
Cons:
a) By breaking the promise, it will reduce the image of Sameer in the eyes of CEO of
baba and everyone back (HR) in the company.
b) Samir can be labeled as selfish and self-centered.
c) Sameer may risk his job security because he is refusing to return to work for BABA,
which is an established company and is accepting an offer from a new company
(CLOUDSKIM) that has little experience of doing business.

3. Choose Loyalty over Luxury. Return back to BABA and work for at least 3 years
instead of repaying the tuition fees.
Pros:
a) Sameer would be praised highly and would win the heart of employees of baba as
well as CEO (HR too) by keeping the promise.
b) Mr. Baba would be Motivated to send his employees to do MBA and will allow
and finance deserving employees for MBA in order to increase his business.
c) The company would be able to execute the managerial skills of Sameer and others
thereby performing better.
Cons:
a) Sameer would lose such a great opportunity to work for (cloud skim) which can
help in growing both professionally as well as financially.
b) Sameer will have to work for the same company in which he has worked for a long
time with a much lower salary and no prospect of rapid gr
Decision and Justification
As a manager loyalty is one of the quality managers should possess. Sameer should choose the first
option as because of the CEO of baba he was able to study business studies which will prove his
loyalty to BABA which helped him reach better level in life. Working there for at least 3 years,
gaining more experience and delivering good results will shape up his future as a very good manager.

Money and better facilities can even be achieved after 3 years. Working at lower position might be a
disadvantage with a lesser growth prospect. But what he will earn apart from his salary is a great
respect gratitude and love from the CEO of BABA and everyone else at BABA. CEO of BABA will
allow more employees to go for MBA and improve their business skills in order to grow company in
order to help company’s deliver better future results.

Returning to the company will lift the image of Sameer in the eyes of CEO and can be a role model
for his colleagues and juniors. Also giving Sameer his desired salary would help BABA get a
tag of being a generous and kind employer in the market.

Action Plan
1. Firstly, Sameer should celebrate his completion of his MBA with BABA as they have supported
him in this cause Sameer must inform Mr. Baba about the offer which he rejected.
2. Sameer must inform the BABA that he rejected the offer of CLOUDSKIM.
3.Sameer should also inform Mr. Baba about the better prospects and his expectations in life
4. He should probably ask Mr. Baba to improve his salary and promote him to a managerial level to
motivate Sameer to perform well
Contingency Plan
Sameer can ask Cloud Skim to hold the offer for a week. Till then Sameer can try and negotiate his
demands with Mr. Baba. If Sameer does not get the desired salary at BABA, he can surely join
Cloud Skim and they are ready to offer a much better salary and facilities to Sameer. Also it is
beneficial for him with the salary and benefit as well as from the growth perspective as well in the
market. Sameer’s demand is not met, he can join Cloud Skim.

Exhibits
Returning to BABA will be beneficial for Sameer in all aspects would be able to keep his promise
proving his loyalty and could have a better learning and growing experience.
