Question

A steel beam is shown below. It has an elastic perfectly plastic stress strain relationship. Grade of
steel is E250A for which Young's modulus = 200 GPa and yield stress = 250 MPa. The cross-
section of the beam is shown in the section view X-X. Calculate i) The plastic moment capacity. ii)
Draw all the possible collapse mechanisms of the beam. iii) By using plastic analysis calculate the
ultimate value of external load P. 4+1+5
Additional 2 marks will be awarded to those who will correctly solve for the collapse load
considering all the possible collapse mechanisms.
