ABSTRACT
In the field of automobile, We have studied & observed the main component of automobile &
to understand the function of various component. Also we have found a possible faults and
taken a necessary action for repair. We have carried out the regular maintenance of the motor
vehicle. We have observed workshop layout & measuring instruments, tool and workshop
equipment.

iv
AUTOMOBILE TECHNOLOGY
1.Introduction
An automobile is a vehicle which is not powered by human but rather controlled by a human.
Automobile, byname auto, also called motorcar or car, a usually four-wheeled vehicle designed
primarily for passenger transportation and commonly propelled by an internal combustion
engine using a volatile fuel.
Mahindra Auto is one of india’s largest passenger & commercial vehicle located in Mumbai,
Maharastra , India. Mr. Anand Mahindra is a current chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra
limited.
Agni in-corporated Pvt. Ltd. began business in 1991 as the authorized distributors of Mahindra
utility vehicles and tractors in Nepal.
Hidamba Auto Pvt. Ltd. Began business in 2015 as the authorized distributor of Mahindra four-
wheel vehicle in Hetauda, Makawanpur. It was located in chaukitol-1, Hetauda. Mr. Krishna
Gopal Singh is the managing Director & Mr. Shamim Raj Ansari is the official in-charge of
Hidamba Auto Pvt. Ltd.

1
2. Objective of the study
The objectives of the study were
To familiarize the main component of Mahindra vehicle.
To understand the function of various components.
To find possible faults and take necessary action for repair.
To carry out the regular maintenance of vehicle.

2
3. Methodology
To know the different types of main component & their function of automobile was studied &
observed will be done in two categories: Primary sources & secondary sources of observation.

3.1 Primary sources of observation

3.1.1 Observation
Primary source of observation was done by observing the resources in their location. During the
observation code of gear teeth, counter shaft, bearing, hub etc. were observed.

3.1.2 Interview
Different personals involved in this field were interviewed to get further information.

3.2 Secondary sources of observation

Secondary source of data collection was done from the internet, we can easily get information
about the problem which are probably occurring in the information which may be useful for
automobile techniques.

3
4. Observation & Discussion
DAY-1
 Explained about various tools which is open wrench, combined wrenches, hammer, ring
wrenches, screw-driver, pipe wrenches, spanner, c-clamp, vice-plier, monkey plier, lock-
plier, dial etc.
 Explained about the layout of the show-room & brief about the bays, two post lift, vice
bench, grinder, hydraulic press, lathe, toolbox, tool storage room etc.
 Explained the process of service of Mahindra vehicle.
 Explained the various parts of automobile that is wifer, bernut, chassis, tire, gearbox,
engine, propeller shaft, tie-rod, differential gear, rear axle, steering wheel etc.

DAY-2
 Changing of the lubricating oil.
 Changing of air filter, oil filter, diesel pipe etc.
 Checking of lubricating oil level, water level in radiator.
 Tightening of nuts & screws.

DAY-3
 Checking breaks
 Checking break shoe thickness
 Facing of drum
 Caliper checking
 Spindle checking
 Upper arm bush changing
 Tie-rod bush changing
 Wheel rotation

 Checking of clutch plate
 Checking of friction plate
 Changing of gear tooth
 Changing of bearing in counter shaft

4.1 Component of an automobile

The automobile can be considered to consist of the following basis component:
The Engine: It is a source of vehicle. In Mahindra automobile, Maximum it consists internal
combustion diesel engine. For example: Mahindra S5 (Scorpio), Mahindra S6(pick up), Mahindra
bolero (ambulance) etc.
The frame & Chassis: It supports the engine, wheel, body, breaking system, suspension system,
steering system etc. Mainly it was made from cast iron.
The transmission: Which transmits power from the engine to the automobile wheels or rare
wheel. It consists of Clutch, transmission, shaft, axles, and differential gear, universal joint, rare
wheel etc.
The body & Controls: It consist the frame of the vehicle.
Accessories: It includes light, air condition, wiper, carriage etc.

5
4.2 Function of various component
1. Gear box:
Function of gearbox in the vehicle are following:
a. To multiply the torque being transmitted by the engine.
b. To provide a means of reversing the vehicle.
c. To provide a permanent position of neutral.

FIGURE 2 Gear box (output shaft)

2. Clutch:
Function of clutch was transmitting the torque from the engine to the gearbox or drive train.
Also it helps to perform quietly and to reduce the vibration.

6
3.Hub:
Function of hub, it keeps your wheel attached to your vehicle and allows the wheels to freely
turn enabling you to safely steer.

FIGURE 3 Hub

4. Differential gear:
It helps to transmitted the power from propeller shaft to the rear axel also it divided the force
equally between the rear wheel. It also helps to maintain the rotation of wheel in unequal
follows path.

5. Propeller shaft
It delivers torque from gear box to the differential.
6. Universal joint
To transfer the torque from one shaft to another shaft. Also it allows the rod to bend in any
direction.

7
7. Leaf spring:
The main function of leaf spring is to provide comfort to the passenger by minimizing the
vibration.
8.Piston

FIGURE 4 Piston
It helps to transmit the force of explosion to the crankshaft. To form a seal so that the high
pressure gases in the combustion chamber do not escape in crank case.

9. Crankshaft:

8
The function of crank shaft is received the efforts or thrust supplied by piston to the connecting
rod & converts the reciprocating motion of piston in to rotary motion of crankshaft.

FIGURE 5 Crankshaft & Camshaft

10. Camshaft:
It converts the rotational motion to reciprocal motion. It used to operate the intake and
exhaust valve.

4.3 Repair & Maintenance

All automotive vehicle required maintenance and repair. At certain interval of time, Mahindra
company automobile was checked by the official in-charge of Hidamba Auto Pvt. Ltd. In
Mahindra showroom, there was provided a number of bay that is bay-1, bay-2, bay-3 etc. Bay
contains a two post lift, workbench, different tools & equipment etc., needed for repair a
component of vehicle.
Vehicle maintenance is carried out when the vehicle completes certain kilometers on its normal
running or when the vehicle does not give a proper performance.

5. Conclusion
In Hidamba Auto Pvt. Ltd., we have observed a different types of Mahindra model vehicle. Also
we have familiarized with main component & its function of vehicle. In certain period of time
we have also observed the repair and maintenance technology.
