SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

BUKLAT AKLAT MOBILE LIBRARY

The mobile library is visiting 6 elementary schools in Malapatan from November of this year to March
2009. The library contains 600 titles, all storybooks by Filipino authors. Most of them are bilingual, in
English and Tagalog. The school arranges for all of the sections to visit the library for 45-minute periods.

After the six schools are completed, 100 titles will be donated to each of the 6 participating schools.
After 6 months, the school that has developed the best reading program for the donated books will
receive a permanent library from the National Bookstore.
AF monitors the implementation of the program and also transports the books from one school to
another.
The kids write down the titles they have read that day on a small piece of colored paper. They then stick
it onto an “Ibong Adarna” poster, as seen in the photos.

Feedback from the teachers is that the kids are always excited about library time, and hang around after
class hoping that they can spend extra time in the library.

BUKLAT AKLAT LEAVE BEHIND LIBRARY

Started in 2007, the Buklat Aklat Leave Behind Library is a project of the National Bookstore
Foundation. It is an off-shoot project of their successful Mobile Library program.

The Leave Behind library is a collection of 750 books including reference and reading materials such as
Philippine-published storybooks, the Book of Knowledge, almanacs, dictionaries, novels and other
awarding winning literary materials. The library donation also includes the shelves and racks. The
school's participation will be enlisted in refurbishing their current library space to ensure that the new
book collection has an appropriate home which kids can enjoy using.

PROJECT ARAL

Every year, the national book store Foundation, Inc. Launches project aral. Now, the campaign is meant
to give public school kids, those who were affected by the taal eruption, their own sets of school supplies
. Help us fulfill this initiative by donating a certain amount of money to buy notebooks, pencils, erasers,
sharpeners, and slippers. It'S a way to give back to the young generation of our country'S future leaders
and innovators.

PROJECT AKLAT

Project Aklat is an initiative started back in 2006 by the NBS Foundation, and 400 libraries have been set
up since then. Now, with the ongoing ROLC campaign, NBS aims to set up 100 libraries nationwide.
All you have to do is post a video of yourself reading out loud an excerpt from your favorite book and
challenge 3 other people to do it. When you upload to either Facebook or Instagram, add the hashtag
#ReadOutLoudChallenge and tag National BookStore (@nbsalert).

The ROLC will promote and support Project Aklat, the NBS Foundation will also launch the 8th year of
Project Aral this April 7,2017 in all NBS branches nationwide. Project Aral aims to visit and help over
150 communities who lack basic school necessities. That’s why in this year’s Project Aral, there will be
two different kits: The first kit which costs only 25 pesos contains 2 notebooks, 2 pencils, a sharpener,
and an eraser.

The second kit costs 50 pesos and  contains 2 notebooks, 2 pencils, a sharpener, an eraser, and a pair of
slippers – a great gift for children who currently have to make their way to school barefoot. But
whatever kit you purchase will surely bring a smile to many Filipino children.

SPECIAL SCHOOL PROJECT YOLANDA

WITH the variety of challenges going viral on social media, National Book Store (NBS) decided to ride
the trend for a cause. In time for its 75th year, NBS has promised to build one library in an indigent
community for every 75 videos posted online as part of its Read Out Loud Challenge.

The campaign, launched on March 21, will run for three months. NBS hopes to reach its target of 7,500
videos to be able to build 100 libraries nationwide.
The rules are simple: One has to post a video reading an excerpt from a favorite book out loud, and
challenge three other people to do it. The video must be uploaded to either Facebook or Instagram with
a hashtag #ReadOutLoudChallenge and tag National Book Store’s social media handles (@nbsalert).

Schools hoping to be recipients of the library are asked to send in a request letter, and NBS chooses the
schools to grant a library depending on need and its readiness to maintain the library.

There will also be a special project with best-selling international author Mitch Albom which will build
libraries in Typhoon Yolanda-stricken areas including Leyte, Samar, Cebu, and Ormoc.

As of April 19, the NBS Facebook page stated that 1,494 videos had been posted online including several
by celebrities, authors, and social media influencers. NBS founder and literacy advocate Socorro “Nanay
Coring” Ramos also has an entry which has her reading a passage from Yvette Fernandez’s book Nanay
Coring: The Story of National Book Store’s Socorro Ramos.
