organization has a proud history of offering landmark innovative and customized
solutions. It is founded in 1978. It is most reliable company in Pakistan. The construction
tender of Aziz Cross Gujranwala has been given to this firm. NLC won contract through
open bid on 4 Jan, 2016

Consultant(NESPAK)
NESPAK enjoys the status of presence one of the highest
engineering consultancy organizations in Asia and Africa. It is graded amongst the
world’s top 200 consulting companies. NESPAK was established in 1973 as a private
limited company by the Government of Pakistan. At Aziz Cross Flyover, NESPAK gives
best consultancy service to complete this project. All the work completed by contractor
has been examined by this firm.
2. ABSTRACT
The flyovers are constructed since early seventeen. The major impact of the flyover
construction to curb traffic congestion problem has assessed in terms of traffic
decongestion, time saving, fuel saving and emission reduction. However planning,
design, construction, and erection of fly-over consume great span of time. The report is
about Aziz Cross Flyover on G.T Road at Constructed in Gujranwala. There are 5-
Flyover constructed at G.T Road Gujranwala which have the different length, width and
curves. Superior seismic resistance and life span. Bridges and fly-over’s are structures
providing passageway over an problem without closing the way beneath. The required
passage may be for a road, railway or a valley.Bridge design is a compound problem,
calling for ingenuity and feasibility, while satisfying the basic requirement of safety and
economy. This is the mega project at Gujranwala, Punjab Pakistan. The designer
company of this project is National Engineering Service of Pakistan ( NESPAK ). And
Contractor is NLC(National Logistics Cell). The MD of NESPAK TARIQ have designed
it. I did internship at this project. My experience about this project is so good, I educated
many things from it.

Aziz Cross known as Lohianwala Bypass is located at G.T Road Next To Lohianwala,
Gujranwala City, Punjab, Pakistan .Average Daily Traffic ( ADT ) 2.12 lakh heavy and low
traffic vehicles pass from this bypass of big cities like Lahore, Gujrat, Rawalpindi, Sialkot
including Gujranwala Local Traffic. It is the also Current and Incoming point of Gujranwala
City. It is called a back-bone of Gujranwala according to all aspects. National Engineering
Services Pakistan (NESPAK) was given the task of a complete design by the Communication
and Works Department for a signal-free interchange at Aziz Cross, Gujranwala. The construction
tender of Aziz Cross Gujranwala has been given to NLC company which is well-known
construction firm in Pakistan. The signal-free interchange at Pindi Bypass was request by the
citizens of Gujranwala because they were challenged many problems due to traffic shortage.

7. PROJECT STRUCTURE
The structure is about Box Girder Cast in situ. Usually the most of the other countries used Box
Girder as a pre-cast. The structure of the project has a big task for designer NESPAK and
contractor NLC to manage every thing at site. NLC follows all the standards to do work at site for
complete this project. No doubt it’s a very complex structure but NLC managing all the crises.
The structure of the project can be separated into two categories as follow:

 Sub-Structure
 Super-Structure

Sub-Structure

6
ADEEL AHMAD BCTF13E033

Foundation is part of substructure. Substructure is the lower portion of the building or bridge

which conveys the dead load, live loads and other loads to the under sub-soil. According to
bridge construction the major parts of sub-structure as follow:

1. Piles
2. Piles Cap
3. Piers
4. Abutments

1. PILES
A deep foundation is a type of foundation which transfers building loads to the earth farther
down from the surface than a shallow foundation does, to a subsurface layer or a range of
depths. A pile is a vertical structural element of a deep foundation, driven or bored deep into
the pounded at the building site. The length of piles construct at Aziz Cross Flyover is
different according to soil condition. Normally piles length is 38m.

3. Piers
A pier, in architecture, is an erect care for a structure or superstructure such as an arch or
bridge. Sections of structural walls between openings (bays) can function as piers.

4. Abutment
It refers to substructure at the end of the bridge span.

It supports;
 Super structure load
 Live load

 Lateral earth pressure

8. BOX GIRDER
A box girder in which the main beams comprise girders in the shape of a hollow box. The box
girder usually comprises either pre-stressed concrete, structural steel.Box girder bridges are
usually used for highway flyovers. The box is typically rectangular or trapezoidal in cross-
section. At Aziz Cross Flyover trapezoidal box girder are used on site means cast-in-situ box
girder used. Box girder used in flyover 1,2,3,4. The dimension of box girder is as follow:

9. I- GIRDER
A I-girder bridge, in general, is a bridge that uses girders as the means of supporting the deck. A
I-girder bridge is very likely the most commonly built and utilized bridge in the world. Its design
is simple and easy. The span range is low and medium. At Aziz Cross flyover I-girder used
flyover 5.

I-GIRDER PRECAST

10.PRE-STRESSED BOX GIRDER AND I-GIRDER

Pre-stressed compression is twisted by the tensioning of high strength "tendons" placed within or
head-to-head to the concrete volume, and is done to recover the performance of the concrete in
service. The pre-stressed box girder tendons, the company Strong Force(SF) did all the work. At
Aziz Cross Flyover pre-stressed method is adapted for box and I girder. The stressing is carried
out with two methods that are
 Pre-tensioning
 Post tensioning
Cast-in-situ post-tensioned box girder construction is used throughout At Aziz Cross
flyover.
Post-tensioning:
Post-tensioning is a form of pre-stressing. Post tensioning is a technique for reinforcing
concrete. Post-tensioning tendons, which are pre-stressing steel cables inside plastic pipes or
sleeves, are located in the forms before the concrete is placed . Post tensioning is carried out with
hydraulic jack. Post-tensioned concrete means that the concrete is transferred and then the
tightness is applied-but it is still stressed before the loads are applied so it is still pre-stressed.
After the post tensioning, the duct with filled with.

TENDONS IN WEBS

For tensioning of box girder, components are

o Tendon
o Strands

Tendon:
A tendon is basically a steel cable used in Pre-stressed Concrete structural elements like beam,
column etc. It is a medium through which tensile stresses are tempted into the concrete. It perhaps
one single steel cable or a group of cables twisted together to pass through required quantity of
tensile stresses.
Strands:

Strands are made with 7 wires of cable that kept in duct pipe for pre-stressing.

11.RETAINING WALL
Retaining walls are relatively rigid walls used for supportive the soil mass crosswise
so that the soil may be retained at different levels on the two sides. They are used to guaranteed
soils between two different elevations. There are many kinds of materials that can be used to
make retaining walls like concrete blocks, poured concrete, treated timbers, rocks or boulders. At
Aziz cross flyover poured concrete retaining wall is used at flyover 5. There is the vibration of
train and pressure of heavy traffic.

RETAINING WALL

12.PANEL WALL
Panel wall is used for the placement of poured concrete retaining wall. It’s the same
function of retaining wall. Panel wall is the new technology. It is easy to construct and placed.
Normally the pre-cast panel are used. At Aziz cross flyover panel are used all flyover ,loops and
ramp expect flyover 5 where poured concrete retaining wall is used.

PANELS

13.EARTH WORK

An embankment or other construction made of earth; especially, one used

as a field fortification. othe operations connected with excavations and embankments of earth. A

lot of earthwork is done at Aziz cross Flyover because the roads are provided along the sides of
Flyover. Service roads are provided along the roads and on drains.

14.CONCRETE BATCHING PLANT

A concrete batching plant, is apparatus that associations several fundamentals to
form concrete, some of these involvements include air, water, sand, admixtures, aggregates and
cement. The distance of plant to site is about 700m. The capacity of Transit Mixer is about 7
cubic meter.

17.Duty at Flyover 4:
Firstly I was appointed as internee on Flyover 4 at Aziz Cross Gujranwala under the supervisor
Mr. Salman Munawar. He treated me very well and taught me all thing that use in Flyover 4.
Day by day I was seeking knowledge and learnt a lot of things. I educated there all things like
reading drawings, how to deal with contractor, how to inspection of work etc.
When request reached from Contractor to the office(NESPAK). I had go for inspection with my
Supervisor. I I obeyed all the rules of my Company and did as they said.

18.Work Experience:
It was one of the most outstanding days of my time at work. After being introduced to everyone.
I have been working for main consulting firm NESPAK . They were very open and happy for me
to subsidize as much as I wanted to, and were open to any suggestions and ideas. This suddenly
made me feel comfortable and definitely made me feel as though I was part of the NESPAK
team. When I enter the company(NESPAK). I met Engineer Altamash Aourangzeb(ARE). Then
I met the Resident Engineer(RE)(Naveed Anwar) of NESPAK. he did welcome to me for joining
NESPAK company. He treated me very good and gave inspirational things, then he appointed as
internee on flyover 4(occasionally) under supervisor Salman Munawar. He taught me very well
and tell me a lot of technical terms initially, day by day he increased my knowledge. I followed
all the rules. Not even I learnt from supervisor, every staff of NESPAK fully co-operated with
me and lean me about all things that done at site. I learnt about many things at flyover 4,3,2,1.
When request of any site work reached at office, I checked and did inspection with my
supervisor and for gaining knowledge. I educated many things like read drawings, how to inspect
work, how to deal with contractor and others, and many more.
I have also worked with other supervisors that dealt me very good and help to gain more
experience. It was a good chance for me to gain experience and being technically strong.
Everybody help me out for my future career. Through experience and reflection, another
treasured lesson that I learned while working at was that in projects, specially when working in
prime stages of certain project, things may change very rapidly and vividly. Occasionally, I faced
problems with contractors who try to encourage client to follow their designs instead of the
engineer’s design. The client might agree with contractor. Client may accept proposals by the
contractor without any proper documents to judge or prove contractor design is correct. In such

20
ADEEL AHMAD BCTF13E033

situation, as an engineer I have to educate client about the importance of engaging engineers for
a project.
Overall, my work experience at was positive. I was very happy with the amount of things that I
have learnt and experienced in the 4 months of being a Student Engineer with the
company(NESPAK). I am so glad, and proud that I have accomplished my course, and I can now
graduate.
