M3 PRE TASK – POST TASK

BSN-STEM1A UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

M3 PRE-TASK

Instruction: In one sentence, give your comment about the phrase "culture and self are complementary
concepts"

Culture helps to define how a person sees himself, how he relates to others, his thinking, belief, values, and
as well as his way of living.

M3 POST TASK

Instruction: 1. Make a family tree (through drawing or using pictures) 2. Analyze the names of your
grandparents, parents, siblings, and yours. What naming practices do you have in your family? How do you
think your name establishes your social identity?
After analyzing the names of my family members, I’ve come to know that there is an unintentional
naming pattern that was formed through generations. Most of the names are related to religion, and
according to my mother, my dad and hers, as well as the names of my grandparents on both sides were
based on an old calendar of patron saints and their feast days known as “Dimasalang Kalendaryong Tagalog”
written by Honorio Lopez on 1922. Moreover, as for my name, it was based on the patron saint of our
former village St. Monica, the mother of St. Augustine. I think that my name doesn’t have a huge impact
on my social identity except to the idea that some people expect me to be soft, generous, and considerate
at all times. However, I’ve come to understand that it is I who establishes the majority of my own identity
and not the perception of others to who and what am I.
