Week 5: Sampling and Sampling Distributions

Learning Competencies:
 illustrate random sampling;
 distinguish between parameter and statistic; and
 define the sampling distribution of the sample mean for normal population when the variance is: (a)
known
(b) unknown.

Lesson Notes:

STATISTIC - is a numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample.

PARAMETER - is a numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a population.
A sampling distribution of sample means is a frequency distribution using the means computed from all
possible random samples of a specific size taken from a population.

Examples:
1. The population mean of the electricity bills of the residents of a certain city is ₱1,500.00. PARAMETER
2. The sample mean of the electricity bills of 20 residents of a cetain city is ₱1,000.00. STATISTIC
3. The population mean IQ of the students in a certain University is 105. PARAMETER
4. The sample mean IQ of 35 students in a certain University is 80. STATISTIC

STEPS IN CONSTRUCTING SAMPLING DISTRIBUTION OF SAMPLE MEANS

1. Determine the number of possible samples that can be drawn from the population using the formula. nCr
where n = size of the population
r = size of the sample
2. List all the possible and compute the mean of each sample.
3. Construct a frequency distribution of the sample means obtained in Step 2.

Example: A population consists of the numbers 2,4,9,10, and 5. List all the possible samples of size 3 from this
population.

Sample Mean
2,4,9 5.00
2,4,10 5.33

d. N = 50 = 1_9_,_6_0_0
e. N = 100 = 1_6_1_,_7_0_0

Exercise 2. A population consists of five numbers 2, 3, 6, 8, and 11. Consider samples of size 2 that can
be drawn from this population.
a. List all possible samples and the corresponding mean.
