SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
• When lifting parts or assemblies, make sure all slings, chains, or cables are correctly fastened, and
that the load being lifted is balanced. Make sure the crane, cables, and chains have the capacity
to support the weight of the load.

• Do not lift heavy parts by hand, use a lifting mechanism.

• Wear safety glasses.

• DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CONNECTOR before doing any maintenance or repair on electric
lift trucks. Disconnect the battery ground cable on internal combustion lift trucks.

• Always use correct blocks to prevent the unit from rolling or falling. See HOW TO PUT THE LIFT
TRUCK ON BLOCKS in the Operating Manual or the Periodic Maintenance section.

• Keep the unit clean and the working area clean and orderly.

• Use the correct tools for the job.

• Keep the tools clean and in good condition.

• Always use HYSTER APPROVED parts when making repairs. Replacement parts must meet
or exceed the specifications of the original equipment manufacturer.

• Make sure all nuts, bolts, snap rings, and other fastening devices are removed before using force
to remove parts.

• Always fasten a DO NOT OPERATE tag to the controls of the unit when making repairs, or if the
unit needs repairs.

• Be sure to follow the WARNING and CAUTION notes in the instructions.

• Gasoline, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Diesel fuel are
flammable. Be sure to follow the necessary safety precautions when handling these fuels and
when working on these fuel systems.

• Batteries generate flammable gas when they are being charged. Keep fire and sparks away from
the area. Make sure the area is well ventilated.

NOTE: The following symbols and words indicate safety information in this
manual:

WARNING
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in
death or serious injury.

CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in
minor or moderate injury and property damage.

On the lift truck, the WARNING symbol and word are on orange back-
ground. The CAUTION symbol and word are on yellow background.

Each unit has a drive axle, sun gear, ring gear hub, instructions of the brakes.

Operation
The rotation of the differential causes the axle shafts and the sun gears to rotate. The sun gears then cause
the planetary pinions to rotate. Rotation of the pinions causes the planetary spiders to rotate the hubs and the
drive wheels. The ring gear and the ring gear hub do not rotate.

Brake linings can contain dangerous fibers.
Breathing dust from these linings is a cancer
or lung disease hazard. Do not create dust! Do
not clean brake parts with compressed air or
by brushing. Use vacuum equipment approved
for brake dust or follow the cleaning proce-
dure in this section. When the brake drums
are removed, do not create dust.

Do not sand, grind, chisel, hammer, or change

linings in any way that will create dust. Any
changes to linings must be done in a restricted
area with special ventilation. Protective cloth-
ing and a respirator must be used.

NOTE: Under normal conditions, the disc assembly

worn.
• Replace washers if damaged.
• Replace gaskets, oil seals, and grease seals.
• Clean parts and apply silicon gasket material,
where required.
• Remove nicks, marks, and burrs from parts having
machined or ground surfaces. Use a fine file, India
stone, emery cloth, or crocus cloth.
• Clean and repair threads of fasteners and holes.
Use a die or tap of correct size or a fine file.

Welding
Do not repair the drive axle assemblies by welding.

Adjust

1. Tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut to the

initial seating torque listed in Table 1.

2. Rotate the wheel hub, a minimum of two full rev-

olutions in both directions.

3. Using a suitable bar and not to exceed 5 kg (10 lb)

of force, tap the ring gear hub to assist in seating
the wheel hub. For location of tapping of suitable
bar, see Figure 19.

WARNING
Add air pressure to the tires only in a safety
cage. Inspect safety cage for damage before
use. When air pressure is added to the tire, use
a chuck that fastens onto valve stem of inner
tube. Verify there is enough air hose to permit
the operator to stand away from the safety cage
when air pressure is added to the tire.

1. Put tire in a safety cage. See Figure 21.

NOTE: If installation is not correct, remove all air

pressure from the tire. Remove valve core to verify
all air pressure has been removed and make adjust-
