praise and thanksgiving for His presence, who has bestowed grace, guidance, and
His inayah to us, so that we can complete this paper.

This paper was prepared to fulfill the assignment for the english language
course with the title “ Present Perfect Continous Tense”. In addition, this paper
aims to provide insight to the reader about the function and the formula of present
perfect continous tense.

CHAPTER Ⅰ

INTRODUCTION

A. Backgroud
English is an international language that is used to establish relations
with other nations in the word. By mastering English well, besides being
able to astablish communication, we will be able to establish coopration,
add insight and knowladge for the progress of our nation and country.
They are many ways to learn English, like reading English book, wacthing
English film, listen English song, and other. And now we will learn about
present perfect continous tense to adding our knowladge about grammar.

B. Problem Formulation
1. What is present perfect continous tense?
2. What the function and the formula of present perfect continous
tense?

C. Purpose
1. To add the knowladge about present perfect continous tense.
2. To know the function and the formula of present perfect continous
tense.

DISCUSSION
A. Definition
Used to express event/activities that started in the past and continue the
present. Event or actions in the present perfect continous tense usually last
a certain time and have relevance to current conditions.
Look at the following example:
1. Mereka tinggal di Jakarta sejak tahun 2000
2. Andika mengemudi mobilnya selama satu jam (sudah satu jam andika
mengemudi mobilnya)
3. Kita nonton tv selama dua jam (sudah dua jam kita nonton tv)

Using the sentence pattern above, we can translate the sentence into the following
table.

The present perfect continous tense usually used to tell about experiences, work,
and living condition.
Example:
1. She has been living in kediri since 2020. (dia sudah tinggal di kediri sejak
2020). Artinya dia masih tinggal di kediri sampai sekarang.

2. She has been working here for two years. (aku sudah bekerja disini selama
2 tahun). Artinya dia masih berkerja disini sekarang.

B. Function of Present Perfect Continous Tense


1. To state the duration of an activity we are currently doing from the past
until the now.
Example: They have been playing playstation for almost five hours.
2. To state the activities we are doing recently/lately.
Example: Recently, i have been feeling really sad because of my score.2

F. Formula of Present Perfect Continous Tense
In this type tenses to be used is have/has been, while the verb is used verb
ing (present participle). And this is the formula:

a. Verbal
Positive (+) S + have/has + been + verb ing + O
Negative (-) S + have/has + not + been + verb ing + O
Interrogative (?) Have /has + S + been + verb ing + O + ?3

Example: (+) She has been cleaning the house since morning
(-) She has not been cleaning the house since morning
(?) Has she been cleaning the house since morning?

b. Nominal
Positive (+) S + have/has + been + being + C
Negative (-) S + have /has + not + been + being + C
Interrogative (?) Have/has + S + been + being + C

Example: (+) You have been being an assistan lecturer for two month
(-) You have not been being an assistant lecturer for two month
(?) Have you been being an assistant lecturer for two month?

To use have/has must be adjusted with the subject, look at this table 4

E. The Rule of Changing Verb 1 to Verb ing

 Verb ing formed from Verb 1 + verb ing


Example: watch – watching = menonton
Read – reading = membaca
 Verb ending in E changing to ing
Example: Write – writing = menulis
Smile – smiling = senyum
 Verb ending in ee added ing
Example: See – seeing = melihat
Agree – agreeing = setuju
 Verb that end in a consonant, that the consonants are doubled and
added ing
Example: Hit – hitting = memukul
Run – running = berlari
 More than one verb and a single consonant vowel, then the
consonant is added and added ing
Example: Admit – admitting = mengakui
Begin – beginning = memulai
 Verb ending in L and before L is one of vowel, so the letter L is
double and added ing.
Example: Signal – signalling = memberi tanda
 Verb ending in L and before L is two of vowel,so added ing
without doubling L.
Example: Reveal – revealing = menyatakan 5

CLOSING
A. Conclusion
Present perfect continous tense is a form of verb used to express an
event or action that started in the past and is still continuing in the present.
Event or actions in the present perfect continous tense usually last a certain
time and have relevance to current conditions.
The function of present perfect continous tense in a sentence can
be used to express actions that have been done repeatedly until now. With
the formula or characteristics of always using the pradicate kalimat
have/has + been + verb ing and adverbs of time for about, since, lately,
and etc.
