before.

in a religious procession honoring the image
of Jesus through the streets of downtown
Lima.
● You had to wear the color purple with white
rope. The procession route circles downtown
Lima and takes approximately 20 hours to
complete in the main plaza of Lima.
History behind the “El señor de los milagros”
● The story tells that the image of the Christ was painted by a slave of angolese
history on a small wall in the Barrio of Pachacamilla in the center of Lima. The
devotees, mostly slaves, started to get in crowds gathering around the image
and began to worship it, building a small temple around it.
● During the earthquake of 1655 all the structure collapsed, except for the small
wall where the image was painted.
● As Lima is a city to experience earthquakes, this occurrence repeated itself
several times throughout the years. After each earthquake the image of “El
Señor de los Milagros” remain undamaged. This resulted the existing
adoration to continue to grow.
Continued - Literature
● Trilce - is a most famous book by Peruvian poet César
Vallejo, an icon of world poetry. The book was written after
the death of the poet’s mother, in August 1918, and it
reflects all the sadness suffered by Vallejo during this
difficult time.
● Considered one of the great figures of Hispano-American
literature, the poet’s name has stood the test of time and
he is today one of the great figures in world poetry. Vallejo
was excluded by a society that did not understand his
work, which is also reflected in his verses, whose sadness
are heartbreaking.

one of the most important books in literature. Author,
Ciro Alegría considered by many specialists to be the
“starting point” of modern Peruvian literature, it has
numerous editions in Spanish and has been translated

● The book describes the life of an Andean community
called Rumi, where the indigenous people try to defend
themselves from a despotic landowner and corrupt
judges. This novel allows the reader to understand
many of the problems that still afflict Latin American
society.
