Chennai formerly known as Madras or Madarasapatinam , is the

Detroit of Asia'.[12][13]

Chennai is an important centre for Carnatic Music and hosts a

large cultural event, the annual Madras Music Season, which includes
performances by hundreds of artists. The city has a vibrant theatre
scene and is an important centre for the Bharatanatyam, a classical
dance form. The Tamil film industry, one of the largest film industries
in India, also popularly known as Kollywood is based in the city; the

automobile, software services, hardware manufacturing, healthcare and
financial services industries. As of 2000, the city's total personal income
was 12,488.83 crores, making up 10.9% of the total income of Tamil
Nadu.[56] In 2001, the total workforce in Chennai was about 1.5 million,
which was 31.79% of its population. According to the 1991 census, most

Tidel Park is one of the many software parks in Chennai.

Many software and software services companies have

development centres in Chennai, which contributed 14% of India's total
software exports of 144,214 crores during 2006–07, making it the

CLIMATE AND WEATHER

14
CHENNAI has a hot and humid climate, with summer
temperature in Late may and early June often reaching an extreme 38-42
degrees Celsius (100-107 degrees Fahrenheit). The city receives most of
its rainfall during the North-East monsoon from mid-September to mid-
December and heavy rains can be a Problem. The temperature
decreases to an average of 24 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit) during
winter, from November to February, but doesn’t drop Below 20 degree
Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).

TRANSPORT
Three wheeled auto rickshaws offer the easiest way of getting
around but Unfortunately the fares are relatively expensive and rarely
charged as per the Meter Foreigners are invariably quoted excessively
high rates (often more than double) and should be prepared to
negotiate hard before the journey. The taxis in Chennai are known as
“call taxis.
These are private cabs that needs to be phoned in advance and
cannot be Hailed from street. It’s a good idea to hire one of these taxis
to go sightseeing, As attractions are very spread out. Buses are cheap
and cover most of the city.
There is a local train service as well.
