What is art?

Art is the desire of a man to

express himself, to record the
reactions of his personality to
the world he lives in.
--Amy Lowell
‘Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the
artist has experienced’
Leo Tolstoy [1897]
[thinkexist.com/]

‘Art is a human activity having for its purpose the

transmission to others of the highest and the best feelings
to which men have risen.
Art is a human activity consisting in this, that one man
consciously by means of certain signs, hands on to others
feelings he has lived through, and that others are infected
by those feelings and experience them’

ART HISTORY AND THEORY

To help us understand the

symbol and meaning behind every object ,
image or subject matter in art,
we need to understand the historical and social
background of the artist, art period and
society. Thus the knowledge of
Art history and Theory must be studied
to enhance the appreciation of art
Key questionswww.creativity-portal.com

• Why is artistic expression important to our
lives?
• What's the difference between art and
craft?
• How is the knowledge of art history,
famous masters, evolving art forms, art

The Elements of Intellectuality
- Form
- Content
- Context
- Historical documentation
- Cultural meaning
- Heroic cultural domination
- Investment and opportunity
Any form of art is a form of
power, it has impact, it can
affect change-it can not only
move us, it makes us move.
--Ossie Davis
I want to touch people
with my art. I want them to
say he feels deeply, he
feels tenderly.
- Vincent van Gogh
Understanding the concept
• ATH 435 as a case study
• The idea is how to inculcate the element of
intellectuality in history and theory of art
and design among the students. They are
supposed to appreciate, understand and
realize the cultural and intellectual
meanings of art and design work.
• Of course, firstly they need to learn how to
read these so called art and design works.

THEORY 0F ART
• Henri Breuil interpreted the cave paintings as being hunting magic, meant
to increase the number of animals.
• Some theories hold that they may have been a way of transmitting
information, while
• Other theories ascribe them a religious or ceremonial purpose
• David Lewis-Williams suggests that the paintings were made by
Cro-Magnon shamans. The shaman would retreat into the darkness of the
caves, enter into a trance state and then paint images of their visions,
perhaps with some notion of drawing power out of the cave walls
themselves. This goes some way toward explaining the remoteness of
some of the paintings (which often occur in deep or small caves) and the
variety of subject matter (from prey animals to predators and human
hand-prints).
