Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a) define humanities and art;


b) distinguish art appreciation from art history; and
c) explain the importance of art in contemporary
society.
What is HUMANITIES?

• It came from the Latin word “humanitas” which means


educated.
• It is more concerned on how a person expresses his/her
feelings.
• Humanities can also be the study of how an individual
documented and processed his/her experiences
particularly in connecting to others (Stanford University, 2016)

• Is an attitude toward art.
• It allows us to understand deeply the purpose of an artwork
and recognize the beauty it possesses (Collins & Riley, 1931).
• Being able to look at a work of art and form a wise opinion
of the work.
• It is also having the knowledge, background and
understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that
comprise all works of art.
• Therefore, deals with the learning or understanding and

• It is a discipline of studying arts through the lens of history.
