Course Description:
Art appreciation is a three-unit course that
develops student ability to appreciate,
analyze, and critique works of arts. Through
interdisciplinary and multimodal
approaches, this course equips students
with a broad knowledge of the practical,
historical, philosophical, and social relevance
of the arts in order to hone students’ ability
to articulate their understanding of the arts.
The course also develops students’
competency in researching and curating as
well as conceptualizing, mounting, and
evaluating art productions. The course aims
to develop students’ genuine appreciation
for Philippine arts by providing them
opportunities to explore the university and
richness and their rootedness in Filipino
culture.
TOPIC 1.1: THE IMPORTANCE, MEANING
AND ASSUMPTIONS OF ART
Art is important because…
• It is a component of a dynamic
civilization
• It is an essential form of expression
and communication
• It develops the intellect of younger
generation to build up positive
character and appreciate natural
aesthetics.
• It enhances daily experiences
MEANING OF ART
• The word art was rooted in the 13th
century French word art, which
means “skill as a result of learning or
practice.
• Latin word ars, meaning “ability or
practical skill”
grammar, logic, or astronomy
(Collingwood, 1983).
You can describe Art in three different ways:
• Art as an ability
• Art as a process
• Art as a product

Art History
• It is a discipline of studying arts
through the lens of the history. It
involves dealing with objects and
works of art in their historical
development and stylistic contexts.
• The job of the historians is to study
visual and tangible objects humans
make and map them in history
(Pooke & Newall, 2008)
The Meaning of Humanities
• The study of art belongs to the
discipline of humanities. It includes
literature, music and art.

• The modern definition of humanities
aims to shape our subjective energies
(feeling, attitudes, aspirations) in
accordance with a particular view of
the social world in which we dream,
we act, and fulfill ourselves (Ortiz et

towards art. It allows us to
understand deeply the purpose of an
artwork and recognize the beauty it
possesses (Collins & Riley, 1931).
• Art Appreciation in the humanities is
being able to look at a work of art and
form a wise opinion of the work.

Creativity
• Creativity in art involves skill and
expertness in handling materials and
organizing them into new, structural
pleasing and significant units (Ferrer,
et al., 2018)
