Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Following directions!

Objectives:
Students will be able to understand when certain things should be used or not.
Students will be able to operate equipment safely and when told to.
State Standards:
MS.I.4.4: Apply equipment appropriately in physical activity settings and identify safety
concerns associated with specific activities.

Context:
I am teaching this lesson because an important part of physical education is teaching the students
how to use the equipment safely. They need to be able to follow directions and learn exactly how
such things are used so they can be successful in whatever activity they are doing. This also goes
beyond just the class. It will allow them to learn to follow directions and always take safety
precautions when doing things. Before this lesson is taught, they will learn how to work
appropriately and safely in groups to achieve group goals in competitive as well as cooperative
physical activity setting with or without prompting. Students will be bringing in previous
knowledge from maybe their home lives or even school sports. They may play sports using
certain equipment at home with their families, or even be a part of sports where they learn as
well. They also may have knowledge from just watching certain sports games on the TV and
getting the idea. Safety would probably be taught at home so that would make it easier for me to
address it. After this lesson, the students will be full time playing certain sports with the needed
equipment. This would be the last teaching lesson until they got more free time to play the games
and see what they are into. This will teach them how to enjoy these games while being safe and
cooperative.

Data:
Students will be grouped based on their previous knowledge and skills of the equipment we are
using. The first class we have based on this standard I will ask them to show me how to use a
lacrosse stick for example. There will be 2 groups, one being the ones who have previously used
the stick and know somewhat how to and the second will be the students who have little to no
knowledge. At the end of each class, they will be tested again to see who made progress and who
didn’t. The groups will come together at points in class to help each other as well.
Materials:
Websites will be posted on my online page that take you to videos on how to use whatever
equipment we are using that class. There will be worksheets on the safety hazards and what not
to do.
Procedures:
Introduction (5 minutes):

This is the shorter part of class. In these 5 minuets I will just explain what we will be
doing in class. Everyone will come in dressed appropriately for gym class with sneakers and the
right clothes and they will sit in their assigned spots while I take attendance. I will put on an
instructional YouTube video about what we will be learning. It is a short 2-minute video about
the lacrosse basics and what equipment you need to play lacrosse. Lacrosse will be our focus for
today’s class. At the end of the video, I will ask what was mentioned and ask who has seen or
used such equipment before. Then I will take a poll and advise them to raise their hand if they
play lacrosse outside of class. This will all help me decide what group they will be in.

Teacher Directed (10 minutes):
In these 10 minutes, I will help teach them the safety of using the equipment. There are
safety hazards with any sort of equipment and with any sort of sports game. I will show a
PowerPoint that I made before class that day that shows each piece of equipment and how to
correctly use it on the smartboard on the back of the gym. A stick, mouthguard and protective
eyewear are the only required items for this class. I will explain the importance of always
wearing the mouthguard as well at the protective eyewear which is goggles or a helmet. I will
express the importance of making sure the equipment is appropriate to the sport and size and age.
It all must be worn during training not just for the games. The equipment must be checked
regularly and replaced if worn out. I will direct them to the next step which will be practicing
with the equipment showing safe practice. The students who have more knowledge on the
subject will help the others.
Collaborative (20 minutes):
In these next 20 minuets, the students will work together to try and figure out how to use
the equipment correctly and safely after my beginning PowerPoint and lecture. They will be put
in groups of 5 trying to put at least 2 people with more knowledge in each group. For the next 20
minuets I will walk around asking them to show me and tell me how to use the equipment safely
and successfully. They then will be in a competition with the next group as I make it into a
Family Feud type game. Whoever answers my question first and correctly will get a point and
we will tally them all up at the end. I will then separate them and tell them about their next task.
Independent Digital (20 minutes):
In these 20 minuets they will be on their own to try using the equipment. They will each
be handed a ball and they will have to use their stick safely and successfully while I walk around
and help them. They will be instructed all different skills to attempt and then will be asked
questions as they go. They then will be told to put on their goggles or helmet the right way and
take them off safely. As well as the mouthguard. They will each answer a variety of questions as
they do it.

Closure (10 minutes):

At the end of class, they will be advised to put all the equipment away in the correct place
and sit back in their floor spots. I will go down the attendance list and give them each a verbal
exit question. If they get it right, they can go in and change their shoes/clothes and head to
wherever they need to go. If they get it wrong, they must wait till I go back down the list forcing
them to sit and listen, learning what their other classmates have to say. This will conclude class.
