Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
The Five Components of Physical Fitness
Objectives:
o Students will be able to list and briefly define the five components of health-related
fitness.
o Students will be able to describe different activities that correlate to each of these five
components.
o Students will be able to correctly demonstrate an example from at least one of these five
components,
State Standards:
Standard 2: The physically literate individual demonstrates knowledge of concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. (Cognitive Domain)
5-2.4: Identify the five components of health-related fitness (muscle strength, muscle
endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility, and body composition) and describe activities
that correspond to each component.

Context:
This is a fifth grade physical education lesson about the five components of health related
fitness and example activities for each. I chose to teach this lesson because it is important for
students to understand these five components in order to be successful in physical activity. In the
previous lesson, my students learned the importance of practice, the improvement of
performance, and the concepts that effect complex movement. Since the class has already
learned how to improve their performance, they will be coming into this lesson with prior
knowledge about fitness and health. The next lesson I will cover in class is teaching the students
how to write their own goals based on personal strengths and weaknesses. All three of these
lessons flow into each other so my students will eventually be able to comprehend health related
fitness and eventually analyze their own physical abilities.
Data:
For this lesson, students will be split into groups of either four or five depending on how
many students show up to class that day. I will group the students based on the exit ticket data
from the previous lesson. This will show me which students have a strong understanding of
health related fitness, and which ones will need some extra help during this lesson. I will use this
data to mix the different levels of students into groups. This way, the students with more prior
knowledge will be able to assist the lower students at the stations where I won’t be available to
help. I think that allowing my students to help and guide each other will allow them to gain more
knowledge than having the teaching dispense all knowledge. At the end of this lesson, I will
collect student data with an exit slip.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
This class period will begin with my students entering the gymnasium, handing me their
attendance card, and then sitting on their numbered spot until everyone is ready. While sitting in
their spots, there will be five images on the smart board in front of them, one for each component
of health related fitness. The students will observe these images until everyone is ready and try to
figure out what they will learn today. I will start the lesson by asking, “By looking around the
gym and at these images, can anyone guess what we are going to learn today?” I am not
expecting my fifth grade students to know exactly what the lesson is, but I want them generating
ideas to get ready. I will give a few students a chance to answer and then I will go on to tell
them, “Today we are going to learn about the five components of health related fitness and then
we are going to practice some activities for each.” Before starting the stations, I will show the
students this short video to give them a good idea of what the five components are. During the
video I will have the students follow along with all of the movements in the video to help them
remember the terms better. After the video I will sort the students into their groups and tell each
which station they are starting at. Instead of explaining the directions of every station at one
time, I will tell the students, “When you get to your station, please read the directions on the
poster carefully before starting the activity.”

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

In this station, I am dividing the time it into three, five minute sections. First, I will ask
my group, “Does anyone know exercises or activities for these components of health related
fitness?” I will call on one student at a time and then write their responses on the board. Instead
of correcting the student responses, I will show the students this video that lists multiple
examples for each. “Okay class, now I am going to show you this short video, while you’re
watching please observe their examples and think about if your responses were correct or not.”
When the video is over, I will ask the students what they learned and if there is any more
examples they want to add to our list. After this short discussion, I will display the GoNoodle
app onto the Smartboard. I will customize a workout on the app for these kids so that they are
practicing each component of health related fitness. I will start the workout and as a group, the
students will follow along. I will be sure to walk around during this and help any students who
are performing an exercise incorrectly

Collaborative (15 minutes):

During this portion, the group of students will work together to complete each of the five
mini stations. There will be five cones set up with a set of directions on each. At the first station
the students will practice cardiovascular endurance (aerobic capacity) through jogging in place
for one minute. 2 students will jog first while the other two start the timer, and then they will
switch. The next station will cover body composition and the students will work together to
brainstorm ideas to stay healthy, one person from the group will write down their ideas. Next is
muscular endurance and at this section, students will do sit ups in 20-second intervals. They will
do this three times and alternate between sit-ups and keeping the timer. The fourth station will be
all about muscular strength and the students will be doing pushups and lunges. They will have
one minute to do as many pushups as they can, then take a short break and do lunges for one
minute. Lastly, the students will practice flexibility through a series of different stretches. There
will be several different images of stretches at this station and the students will have to walk
around and perform each stretch for 15 seconds. Each mini station will have a poster that
explains the directions, what exercise the students are doing, and for how long.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

In this station, the students will be working independently on their tablets to complete 2
different online review games. The first will be a sorting game that I made for the students.
Example cards will pop up on the screen and the students will have to move it to the component
of fitness that it belongs to. The goal of this game is for the students use what they learned and
apply that in a fast paced game situation. The next game is matching words with the correct
sentencing. All of these words and sentences are health and sports related and there are two
rounds for the students to complete. If there is extra time when the students finish both of these
games, they will have two options for the rest of the time. They can either play these games
again to try and improve their score, or draw a picture of what they think health and fitness are.
These pictures will not be graded, it will just be an opportunity for me to see how my students
interpret what is being taught. The students will have to either remember or write down their
scores for each game because one the exit slip, I will ask how they did with each.

Closure (20 minutes):

When the three stations are finished, all students will get their tablets if they don’t already
have them and come back to the center to sit on their numbered spot. I will then explain to the
students how to open the exit slip and direct them to take a few minutes to fill it out and turn it
in. Once the students all finish their exit slip, we will have a class discussion. I will use a ball and
toss it to students when it is their turn to talk. I will ask the students, “please raise your hand if
you enjoyed this lesson today.” Next, I will ask the students to tell me one of the five
components of fitness and I will throw the ball to the student I choose to answer and then they
will throw it back to my when they finish. Lastly, I will do a short introduction into the next
lesson by saying “Next time we are going to use everything we learned from these last 2 lessons
to create our own fitness goals and make videos for them.”

Rationale:
1. GoNoodle Kids App:
This app is useful for my students because it teaches them the basics of exercising, but in
a fun and energetic way. This app is great for using multiple times because the workouts
can be customized so it is not always the same. GoNoodle is also completely free and
very easy for kids to use on their own either at home or in school. The use of bright
colors and cartoon monsters guiding the workouts will motivate students of all ages to
want to get up and move. This piece of technology differentiates instruction best for
students who are kinesthetic learners, but will benefit for all learners as well because kids
at this age are always excited to get active. This app satisfies my standards and
objectives because I will be able to customize the workout so that only muscle strength,
muscle endurance, aerobic capacity, flexibility exercises are included.
2. “Fab 5 Components of Fitness”:
I chose this YouTube video specifically because of the way it teaches the five
components of health related fitness. This video portrays each of the components as
superheroes and different movements that will help the students to remember each one.
You can tell that the person explaining the terms in this video has taught young kids
before because he is very energetic and clear with his words. He used movements for
each word he used to explain the five components which I liked the most because I could
have my students stand up and follow along with him. Because he is teaching the
components of health related fitness is aligns perfect with standard 5-2.4. This piece of
multimedia benefits all types of learners because it is both a visual and auditory video, as
well as subtitles for students who need to actually see words in order to comprehend.
3. “The 5 Components of Health Related Fitness”:
The main reason I chose this video was because it includes examples for each component
of fitness, which the previous video did not. I made sure to find a video with examples
because learning specific activities for each component is part of the standard I chose.
This video has no speaking or subtitles, so it is based completely on the visual reading
skills of the students, but for this age group I think it is appropriate. The video is full of
bright colors and images which keeps the students engaged the entire time. For only
being a four minute video, I think my students can really learn a lot by watching and
taking mental notes throughout the entire video. This was the most kid appropriate video
I found that covered all of the main points of this lesson.
4. Match It Sentences:
This online game is useful for my students because it will teach them other aspects of
fitness that is not covered in the other videos and apps used. This game will challenge my
students to actually think about certain health and fitness terms, and then match those
with the correct sentence. The game doesn’t quite align with the standards and objectives,
but the students will still be learning something related to this lesson. This piece of
multimedia differentiates the instruction for all learners because it allows the students to
either read the terms themselves or click on them and have the computer say it for them.
The game has a competition aspect that will encourage the students to keep trying until
they actually understand everything.
5. Components of Fitness! Sorting Game:
Not only is Components of Fitness an online learning game for my students, but it was a
game that I was able to make myself. Being able to do this allowed me to make sure that
every aspect of this lesson and the state standards are covered. The one thing that wasn’t
great about this game was I that I could only include four components of fitness instead
of all five. I was hesitant about leaving one out, but couldn’t find many other pieces of
multimedia for this lesson. I chose to leave out the flexibility component because I feel
like that is the easiest for my students to learn about and that they have the most prior
knowledge of that term. I think this game differentiates instruction for all learners
because it is a competition and kids of this age learn the most when they are trying to get
the best score.

6. Google Form Exit Slip:

The reason I chose to use this as an exit slip instead of a game like Kahoot is because I
didn’t want my students to feel like they were being tested as soon as this lesson was
over. Since I created this exit slip myself, I was able to ensure that no test like aspects
were included. Instead of evaluating my students through a test, I wanted to ask them
questions about how much they enjoyed this lesson and something they learned. By
asking questions like these, I will be able to see how interested my students are in this
topic, and then adjust my next lesson to make it more intriguing. If too many of my
students felt like they didn’t learn enough, I’ll be able to add a review into the next
lesson. But if they are all confident with their knowledge of fitness, I can make the next
lesson more advanced and independent for my students. This piece of multimedia will be
beneficial for all types of learners.
