Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Learning the share of power between the three branches of government!
Objectives:
Students will be able to…Restate the key points that each branch of government are involved in a
short essay with three different body paragraphs for each branch.
Students will be able to… Distinguish the difference in jobs between each brand of government
and how the power is shared equally.
State Standards: Standard 2: Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and functions of
government at all levels in the United States.

USG.2.IN: Analyze how power and responsibility are distributed, shared, and limited in the
American constitutional government.

USG.2.ER: Explain the authority, organization, purposes, and responsibilities of the three
branches of government as enumerated in Articles I–III in the Constitution.

Context:
This lesson is an eleventh-grade history lesson about the three branches of government. I
will be teaching this lesson so that the students learn why and how power is distributed and
shared throughout the American government. Before this lesson, the students will have
learned about the philosophers who came together to construct the Declaration of
Independence. The students will also have already learned the Articles of Confederation
and why it led to the Constitutional Convention. This will lead to the students’ new lesson
plan where they learn why the three branches of government were created. From there the
students will learn all three branches in deep detail and learn the federal, state, and local
government including what impact the three branches have on them. The lesson after this
will include a larger overview of the parts of the U.S. Constitution which is divided into 9
parts, the preamble, 7 articles, and the amendments. I am teaching in this order so that
when the next unit arrives my students will have knowledge about the three branches and
can understand them when we move to the full Constitution. Overall, this lesson will bring
the students a greater understanding of the American Political system and government
Data: How will students be grouped in this lesson? What hypothetical data will these groupings
be based on? How will data be collected in this lesson for future groupings and teaching?
The students will be divided into three different groups. The groups will be based on a
Google survey from the previous on how well the students had understood the unit of the
Constitutional Convention and why it took place. This online Google survey will serve as a
basis for me to make the correct groups where each student is placed with another with the
same knowledge. I will make the groups by how well the students answered the survey. The
students with less understanding will be placed together, the students with a decent
understanding will be placed together, and the students will have a full understanding of
the previous unit will be placed together. After the lesson, the students will complete a
similar Google survey on their computers which will include their understanding, how well
the groups worked together, and how they liked the lesson plan. This will help the students
think back about what they learned while also giving me future advice for lessons coming
up and how I can change this current lesson to be more instructional.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes): I will start the lesson by giving having each student open their
computer and refer to the link posted where they will fill out a Google survey on their
comprehension of the last unit. Then after they complete it I will do a brief overview of the last
lesson to refresh it and lead it up to our next and current unit. Then I will pull up the introductory
YouTube video ( https://youtu.be/uUqeAsogI70?si=J505ysbTQWYL4iEz ). listed in the
materials, to give a basis on what the three branches of government are and introduce the
students with small details about what we will be focusing on today in class. After this, I will
return to the survey on my computer and create the groups of students based on their answers. I
will create the groups by giving numbers to the students that should be placed together, the
numbers will be 1,2 and 3. These numbers will also mean the station that the groups are at. I will
then begin to briefly explain what each station will do and where each group will start. Group 1
will start at station 1, which will be the teacher-directed station. Group 1 will start here because
they have the least understanding of the previous topic, and I will help them advance their
knowledge first so that they will succeed at the other stations. Group 2 will start at the second
station which will be collaboration. This is where each student will go onto their computers and
collectively watch a YouTube video ( https://youtu.be/4bOo3s-HHBM?si=yXtYEz7o6sqjePZy.
This video is a rap song that is fun and will help the students memorize. The students will first
watch the song and take notes. Then the students will learn and rap the song together. The third
group will start at the independent digital station. In this station, each student will need their
computer to individually watch a video and complete an ED Puzzle
https://edpuzzle.com/assignments/655befda9f2a61403caece4c/watch . Once the
groups have been created the students will bring their laptops with them and change seats to be
seated around their group.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

The teacher-directed station will be held right in front of my desk. The students will
gather around the desk with their laptops and notebooks in front of them. I will begin by asking
the group if they had any starting questions on the previous lesson, how this lesson comes from
the previous lesson or any beginning questions from the introduction video on this topic. Once
all questions are answered I will begin this station. First, I will provide each student with a
whiteboard and marker. Then I will state something that one branch of government does. Then I
will ask the students to write which branch of government they think it is while also allowing
them to talk it over with each other. This will help the students communicate and explain to their
fellow classmates why their answer is right. I will give a countdown from 15 to make the
students make their decisions fast. Once 15 seconds is up the students will flip their white boards
and show me what branch they put. The questions will look like this.
“This branch makes laws”, “This branch includes the president, vice president, and cabinet. ”..etc
Once I have gone through all my questions, I will hand the students a graphic organizer where
they will fill out what each branch does and who is in the branch. If they have questions, they
will ask me, and I will give them hints to remember. The timer will go off and I will collect their
filled-out organizers.

Collaborative (15 minutes):

In this station, students will gather at their desks to face each other in a circle and work
together as a group. The students will be given a link on their computers to a YouTube song (
https://youtu.be/4bOo3s-HHBM?si=yXtYEz7o6sqjePZy). This is a rap song about the branches.
First, the students will just watch the video together, then they will try and sing with the video.
Then they will try to sing the song without the video. This is a great way to have the kids enjoy
what they are learning. After this station, the students should feel very comfortable with who’s in
what branches and what each branch does. They will continue to learn and sing together until the
timer is up.

Independent Digital (15 minutes):

In this station, students will be together in a group but will work independently. In this
station, each student will need their computer to individually complete an ED puzzle
(https://edpuzzle.com/assignments/655befda9f2a61403caece4c/watch ). This
will allow the students to watch a video while answering questions throughout the video. Each
student's answers and grades will show on my computer. Each student will finish at a different
time and once they are done, they will just review their notes until the timer is up.

Closure (15minutes):
At the end of the lesson, the students will all play a quizziz game about what they had
learned that day. https://quizizz.com/share-folder?

The students who place in the top 3 will receive a lollipop. The students will all use their
computers to play this game while looking up at the smartboards for the questions. This game
will be used so that I can see which students are still struggling with the topic while also seeing
which students fully understand. After the game has ended the students will redirect their
computers to a Final Google survey where they will fill out how the stations helped them and if
they have any advice for the future. https://6fqtsn2zzu9.typeform.com/to/WbzeRaaF

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Multimedia 1= App or website):
YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/uUqeAsogI70?si=J505ysbTQWYL4iEz
This piece of multimedia is an informational video that introduces the entirety of the
lesson. It goes in detail explaining the three branches of government.
YouTube Video: ://youtu.be/4bOo3s https -HHBM?si=yXtYEz7o6sqjePZy

ED Puzzle:
https://edpuzzle.com/assignments/655befda9f2a61403caece4c/watch

This piece of multimedia is an instructional video with questions

embedded. This type of multimedia allows the students to learn a new piece
of information and get quizzed on it shortly after. This allows the student to
remember and learn about the topic better. This also provides direct
feedback if the student got it wrong, they would have to rewatch this part of
the video and relearn the information to choose the correct answer once it
pops up again. This multimedia connects to the standard USG.2.ER because it
allows the students to breakdown and learn each branch individually while learning who’s in the
branch and the responsibilities that the branch has. This activity would score a 3-4 on the LORI
scale. This activity lets students work independently and be quizzed while learning. Closed
captions can be used on the video.

This piece of multimedia is a game that teachers create that will help students memorize and
learn what is being taught. Student learning should incorporate fun and competitive activities to
keep the kids more involved in what they are learning. This game allows the students to show off
how well they learned the lesson as they compete against each other to be the highest on the
leaderboards. This supports student learning, my standards, and objectives because the game
involves everything that was taught. The game connects to the standard USG.2.ER of learning
the authority, organization, purposes, and responsibilities of the three branches of government.
This game would hold a 4-5 in the LORI criteria. This multimedia game allows students to go at
their own pace while learning the lesson criteria. This game provides a good amount of time to
answer questions while also being able to play as many times as the students want.
