Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title:
Understanding the 3 branches of Government

Objectives:
Students will be able to analyze the differences in the three branches of government.
Students will be able to differentiate the branches of our government to help learn more
about our judicial system.
State Standards:
Standard 2: Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and functions of government at all levels in
the United States.

Standard 1: Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental historical and philosophical principles

and ideas that led to the development of the American constitutional democracy.

Context:
This lesson is great for students to be more aware of how our society works. Students will use
their previous knowledge about our judicial system and how the basic system runs. This lesson
will further help students be more knowledgeable about how and why our country does certain
things. There are many things that go on in our country based on decision from our government,
and now students will have a better understanding of why certain things happen. I am teaching
these students the importance of each branch and how they differ from one another. They will
also be taught the pros and cons from each branch, and how they all rely on each other, but act
individually.
Data:
Students will be grouped in 3 different groups (group 1, group 2, group 3). Students will go
through 3 different stations, learning about different things that goes on in our branches. These
groups will be based on the exit slip they filled out during the previous class Data will be
collected through online research, textbooks and PowerPoints within the groups. I will have
these groups of students break out into their groups and start their station that I will assign them
too first. After the students go to all 3 stations, we will have a conclusion at the end.

Procedures:
Introduction (15-20 minutes):
I will begin by asking the class to raise their hands if they know any specific facts about
our government. I will also ask if anyone has any family members who work for the
government…specifically for the 3 different branches. Then, I will go over the assignment and
what is expected in the overall outcome. I will have a finished and final presentation that meets
all required materials for this assignment. We will watch a short video on YouTube that goes
over the basic rundown for each branch of the government. This video will help students start to
think about some of the information they will need to collect for this assignment. Before the
video starts, I will tell the students to write down one thing they learned from the video and to
use that point in their assignment at some point and compare it to what they learn at the end of
their research in their groups (group 1, group 2, group 3). I will tell the groups where they are
going to break out in to get their work done and go over the materials that are needed for this ex:
iPad, Computer, Textbook and Kahoot at the end. The 3 groups will run concurrently in 10-
minute increments…timer is kept by me. I will ring a bell and let the students/groups of when
they need to switch to the next station.

Teacher Directed (15 minutes):

In this station, I will talk about the importance of the 3 different branches and how they
are vital for our country. We, as a group, will watch a short video on our laptops and take a
concluding quiz, following the video. This station is more in-depth details compared to the other
stations the students will go to. After the quiz, I will have a short concluding conversation about
the video, and all the students will say something that they learned, found interesting, or
something that they are still confused about.
Collaborative (15 minutes):
In this station, students will be partnered with 1 other classmate. These small groups of 2
students will watch a video on their iPad (Locating at this station). The video will talk about
what each branch does and for what reason. Following to the video, these groups of students are
going to have to pick their favorite branch. The students will have to draw a picture of the branch
and items that go hand in hand with this branch. At the bottom of the picture, the students need
to write 2-3 sentences of why they picked this branch. This station is much different than the
collaborative station and gives the students a chance to have a fun and hands on activity that
keeps them engaged in the topic.
Independent Digital (15minutes):
In this station, students will be more focused by themselves. Each student will be on their
own personal laptop and will watch video. The video will be a tour of the branches and shows
the physical branches and buildings, and the students will have a checklist that keeps them
engaged in the process. Comparing this to the other stations, this one is viewing the other side of
the branches and gives the students a different appreciation of what is going on in our country.

Closure (25minutes):

At the end of this lesson, students will all play a Kahoot game that covers all 3 of the
stations they just went through. The top 3 students to score the highest during this game will
receive extra credit either on this current assignment, or any future assignment. After the Kahoot
game, 3 students will randomly be chosen to come up to the front of the classroom and say 3
things they learned after this assignment (It does not have to be from their group).
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
“3 Branches of Government, Kids Educational Video, Kids Academy”
This video is very basic and suggested for kids to watch as if they have no prior
knowledge about any of our 3 different branched of our government system. This is a
great video for anyone in the world to watch to get some basic and brief information.
This video does not go into detail but still covers the overall aspect of the branches. This
is a high-quality video for this assignment as it is what the students will watch in the
beginning, before diving in and learning tons of information. This multimedia choice is
the basic choice for an assignment, especially at this level and topic at hand. If this was a
master’s level topic in college, this video would still be beneficial because it covers the
basics, which is always a good refresher for anyone who is trying to do a presentation on
our government.

“Kahoot Game”
This Kahoot game is great for many reasons. Students will have to be fully present and
attentive to the other groups presentations which will ultimately be what the questions are
about in the Kahoot. This will help me understand and monitor which of the students in
the class were paying attention, versus the ones who did not participate in following the
other groups and what information was shared from them.
