Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Weather Observations

Objectives:
● Students will be able to differentiate between different weather conditions.
● Students will be able to describe different weather patterns.
State Standards: K-ESS2-1. Use and share observations of local weather conditions to
describe patterns over time.
Context:
I am teaching this particular lesson because it is important for Kindergarteners to know
different weather conditions. Children have many questions about weather and the
patterns, and why the Earth does what it does. This lesson can help explain the weather
that they will encounter the rest of their lives. K-LS1-1 which is focused on observations
describing patterns of what plants and animals need to survive comes before my lesson in
the larger unit. Previous knowledge children will be bringing to this lesson is knowing
what most of the weather conditions are. Most students will know when it is sunny, versus
when it is raining outside. The unit that comes after this lesson is K-ESS2-2, constructing
an argument supported by evidence for how plants and animals can change the
environment to meet their needs. I am teaching the basic knowledge for the next unit such
as why we put on a coat when it snows.
Data: Students will be grouped by splitting into three groups. There will be a low group, a
middle group, and a high group. These groups will be based on their exit ticket from
yesterday’s lesson that evaluated whether they know any prior knowledge of what weather
is and the patterns that take place. Knowing their prior knowledge will help me determine
where to place my students. Data will be collected for this lesson by playing the Kahoot
game along with an exit ticket of what my students learned from the lesson.
Materials: List all materials used (i.e. websites, apps, pencils, iPads, computers,
worksheets, diagrams, textbooks, etc.)
Introduction: Smartboard, Computer and play the Youtube video-

Closure: Pencil and paper to answer the exit ticket.
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction ( 20 minutes):
My students will enter my classroom and put their things in their cubbies and take a seat.
They will direct their attention up to the front of the room so I can get started with the
lesson. I will first ask them “what is weather”, “what kind of weather do we see” to get
their minds focused and thinking. I will play the youtube video on the Smartboard so
students will see different kinds of weather- https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=KBL5aXSJTlE. After the video is over, I will explain the three groups. I will name off
everyone in the three groups, and where to go around the room. I will list the materials
they will need to bring to the station with them.
Teacher Directed ( 15 minutes): In this teacher directed portion of the lesson I will
ask students to name all the different kinds of weather they know of. When they tell me the
different kinds of weather, I will ask what we wear for each kind of weather? Once They
respond we will have a small discussion, and then watch the Youtube video-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIgDH76RCD4&t=100s . I will ask them what they
learn from the video. I will also explain to them the different weather patterns such as snow
only happens in the winter.
Collaborative ( 15 minutes): In this section students will get their Ipads and sit on
the floor. They will play a fun interactive game together. This game teaches students what
to wear depending on the type of weather. This will help them understand the patterns
with weather and help them begin to have prior knowledge for the next unit.

Independent Digital ( 15 minutes): In this section students will play a Kahoot game
based on weather patterns on their Ipad or computer. This is a fun way to show me the
skills that they learned. The students will compete against each other to get the answers
correct. The winner of the Kahoot game will get to be line leader for a week.
Closure ( 20 minutes): When all students are back to their desks after finishing all
groups, I will pass out exit tickets. My students will answer the previous questions I
assigned last class on this exit ticket so I can see their growth. I will answer any more
questions if needed, then they will pack up their things.

Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
● How’s the weather? Youtube song. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=KBL5aXSJTlE)
This is a piece of multimedia because it is teaching children about weather through
a song. It is a high quality video, and shows puppets explaining the different types of
weather. The video is free so it is accessible to all students, and there are captions as
well during the video so students who have disabilities can still watch and learn. The
concepts throughout the video are easy for the students to consume.
● Dress for the weather. Interactive game
(https://www.abcya.com/games/dress_for_the_weather)
This piece of multimedia is a fun interactive game for children to learn about
weather. This makes students think about how to dress their character based on the
weather outside. This game is high quality, and is free for all students. This game
can be played by all students, even students with disabilities because they drag the
clothes to the character. If the answer is incorrect it will pop up on the screen.
Volume is not necessarily needed for this interactive game. The game has clear
instructions, predictable, and responsive to student’s answers.
● Weather and clothes to wear. Youtube Instructional Video
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIgDH76RCD4&t=100s)
This piece of multimedia is an instructional video teaching students the types of
weather and the patterns with the clothes that we wear. This is a high quality video
and is free for all students. The video is free for all students and also has captions so
that all students can follow along and read. The video is clear and concise so that
students can easily learn the topic.
● Kahoot. Quiz Game (https://kahoot.com/)
Kahoot is a great app that is a quizzing tool for all students and grades. This game
will act as a quiz for my students so I can make sure they understand the material
from the lesson. The fun interactive game will have my students motivated to
compete against each other to get first and be line leader during class.
