Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Yummy in my Tummy

Objectives:
 Students will be able to identify the food groups
 Students will be able to explain the importance of choosing healthy foods and
beverages, including water.
State Standards:
 Standard 1: students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease
prevention to enhance health.
Context:
This lesson is a first grade Health education lesson, about the food groups and healthy
eating. I am teaching this lesson because it is critical for the students to know about the
different food groups, and know what foods are healthy and which foods are not. Before
this lesson, the students have gone over the different food groups one before in class
together. This means that students will be coming into this lesson having some
background knowledge on the information well be discussing. After this lesson, the
students will know what the different food groups are, and which foods are considered
healthy and not healthy. In order to prepare the students for this, the students will learn
about the different food groups, and then look through foods that are healthy for us,
and some that are not so good. This will especially be helpful in the next lesson because
they will already know the food groups, and what’s healthy, so they’ll next be able to
work on portioning the plate. Overall, this lesson will be important in helping students
better identify what they are eating, and how to eat better at school and at home.
Data:
The students will be divided into three groups. There will be a low, middle, and high
group. The groups will be based on the exit slip from the previous health lesson we did
in class on the material. On the exit slip, I added 4 questions to the exit slip that may
come up later again at the end of the unit. The purpose of this is to see what they
students already know, and what I need to work on them with more. The exit slip also
helped me focus my lesson on the material that the students needed more help on. The
exit slip data was used to create the groups for this lesson plan. For this lesson, the
students will complete another exit ticket at the end of the day today. This will be
composed of questions that were directly on the work, and questions that have not
come up yet, to test the students’ knowledge. This will be helpful to the students
because I’ll be able to identity the last bit of information they don’t understand fully,
before we take the unit test, and move on to the next unit.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
This lesson will be the first lesson we start when we return from lunch/recess. I will
allow the students to come back into their desks and settle in, at 1:10pm, we will begin
the lesson. For the hook of this lesson, I will show the students a food group portion
plate. I will make sure each student sees how much of each food group you should have
for each of your meals. For this section of the lesson, the students will need their
notebook and a writing utensil. I will ask the students to grab their materials and come
take a seat on the rug by my desk. This will take the students about 5 minutes or so. I
will play the you tube video through the computer and display it on the smart board.
While playing the video, I will pause the video before she begins to name the food
groups. I will tell the students to write down the name of each food group, and at least
one example food from each group. While the video continues to play, the students will
take note of the 5 food groups and write down some examples for discussion. After the
video is done playing, the students will remain on the carpet and will discuss the video
with me. We will spend about 10 minutes discussing the video, talking about what the
different food groups are, and what some examples of foods in each group would be.
After we complete this class discussion, I will send the students back to their seats, on
their way to their seats, students should place their video sheet and place it in the turn
in bin on my desk, and then I’ll tell the students that it is time for stations. Three
different stations will be written on the white board, and I will make sure to read the
names of the students aloud. I will then go through what each of the stations are and
show the students where the required materials are for that activity as well as how to
access links. I will explain to the students that they will have between 15-20 minutes at
each station, and this means that they need to get work done at each station and not
goof off. If there are no questions for me, I will then ask them to transition to their first
station quickly but quietly. I will tell the students when it is time to move to the next
station.
Teacher Directed (15-20 minutes):
At the teacher directed station, I will make sure that students know the difference
between healthy and nonhealthy foods. This station will be on the rug, next to my desk
in front of the smart board. The students will begin by watching a you tube video in
order for them to get a grasp on healthy vs not. I really want students to know the
healthy foods, from the ones that aren’t so good for us to eat a lot of. After watching
this video, I will hand each of the students a worksheet that I have created. I will talk
with the students in the group, about the items of food that are on the sheet. We will
discuss what food items are the healthy choices, and which ones we should leave off of
the dinner plate. Then I will hand out the colored pencils and allow the students to color
the foods on the sheet that are the good options, not the bad ones. This will be a great
time for me to walk around and check on the other groups progress and see about how
much more time well need for this station. I will make sure to help the students that
look like they are struggling or have questions. This station will hopefully help the
students easily identify which foods are not healthy, and which foods are healthy.

(self-created worksheet)
Collaborative (15-20 minutes):
At the collaborative station, the students will be working in the partners of their choice
in the reading corner on the circle reading rug. I will let the students know that if there
are any problems with their partner choice, they will work alone. The students will be
using their iPad to play the MyPlate game as a pair. The students will know where to
access their iPad, they are located in the reading corner in the “IPAD CAVE”. The
students will also be using paper, and coloring utensils, which are both located in the
back closet by the supply’s cabinets. The students should immediately log into their iPad
and go to the google classroom where they can access, they link to the game. After the
pair completes the game, they should grab their sheet of paper, and the coloring
utensils of their choice. They will draw a plate on their sheet of paper and create a plate
of their own using the coloring utensils. I will let the students know beforehand that I
will be collecting their plate drawings at the end of the rotation. If all the groups have
finished their activity before the time is up, then they all should discuss their plate
drawings with the other students in that same rotation group who are also done. This
station allows the students to practice building a healthy plate instead of a plate full of
junk food. It will also be beneficial to work with other students to see what their plates
look like and identify different, but also correct answers.
Independent Digital (15-20 minutes):
At this station, students will work on their own, on individual iPads. They will be sitting
at a specific group of desks, the ones directly in front of the classroom. They will be
playing a game that is on their iPad. The students know where the access their iPad as
explained previously. The students will independently access the game on their own
iPad and play the game till they have completed all the levels they can. The game has 6
levels, so it should take them quite a bit to complete the game. Once they have
completed all 6 levels, they should take a screen shot of their screen, and easily submit
to our google classroom, under the submission title “Bug Game Score”. If any student
were to find themself struggling, they can always ask for help, and I will be able to
explain it to them. This station is intended to inform the students about the different
food groups, while also keeping them entertained with the bug. I will record the
progress from this station, by looking at their submitted screenshots. If students are
done with the activity before the time is up, they can continue to color their coloring
page from the teacher station. If the student hasn’t been to that station yet, then they
should play the game again until it is time to switch to the next station.
Closure (25 minutes):
The students will go back to their seats after all the stations are all nice and clean like
before we started the activity. This means that all coloring utensils should be returned
to their correct homes, and the students will return to their desk with their iPad. During
this time, I will collect all the worksheets that have not yet be collected, and I will ask all
the students to log into their iPad and get onto the Kahoot app. After I’m done collecting
worksheets, I will put up the game pin for the game on the smartboard for all students
to be able to see. The questions in this kahoot will consist of healthy, and unhealthy
food choices, making the students identify either the healthy or the unhealthy option,
questions on the definition of healthy, and questions about knowledge on the “perfect”
food plate. At the end of the kahoot, the last question will be along the lines of knowing
this information confidently, (consisting of a yes or no question). Whenever all the
students have joined the game, and I have collected all the worksheets, we will play the
game. Kahoot is a fun way for students to wrap their brain around the material learned
in class that day. Once the game is over, all the students will be instructed to return
their iPad to the iPad cave by group number. The students will then move on to
complete their exit ticket closing assignment. This should only take around 5-10 minutes
for the students to complete. This exit ticket will consist of some similar questions to the
kahoot, along with a few fills in the blank questions. The last question on the exit ticket
will be a short response and will consist of any material the students feel they don’t
know enough about and would like more help. I will give me a well-rounded
understanding of what the students know and what they do not know so I can
determine if we need to spend more time on the material, and how much more practice
the students may need. Also, this will help me point out some individuals who I notice
do not understand the lesson at all but are too shy to speak up in front of everybody.
With the completion of this assignment, our lesson will come to an end. I will transition
to the next subject by having the students take out their independent reading books.
Rationale:
1. Introduction YouTube video “The 5 Fabulous Food Groups”
I chose to use this piece of multimedia because I figured it would be a good way to start
off the lesson with a slow but fun introduction to the topic of the food groups and
healthy eating. The students in my class really enjoy watching videos, so I try to
incorporate them into my lessons more. While the student watch the video, it will give
me a few minutes to make sure all the necessary materials are in their correct places.
The video supports ideas that the students might previously have about food and their
groups. This also gives students a great opportunity to practice their quiet listening
skills. The video achieves the learning goal by explaining to the students what the food
groups are and what foods go into those groups. The design and layout of the video was
perfect for the introduction of this topic to the students. The video will also motivate
the students in a way that makes them more interested in this topic. By having the
students record some notes from the video, they get to then share information with
their peers and learn from each other.
2. YouTube video “Healthy Eating Habits for Kids”
I chose to use this piece of multimedia because I felt it would be a good, deeper dive
into the topic of foods with the students in my teacher directed group. Each of the
students will have to opportunity to watch the video and fill out the coinciding
worksheet to go along with it. The students in my class tend to be more visual learners,
so videos and presentations are better for their development in this class. While the
students watch the video, it will also give me a second to pass a worksheet out to each
of the students in the rotation. This video will help the students gain the knowledge
they need to complete the activity that’s given after the video. This video also gives the
students a good opportunity to think about all the foods that they eat on a daily basis,
and if those foods are good for them or not. The video achieves the learning goal of the
students by showing the students examples of healthy foods, and non-healthy foods.
The design and layout of the video was prefect for the topic I was teaching in my small
teacher-led group. The video will also help motivate the students to remember which
foods are the healthy ones, and which are not, for when they return home and look at
the food options they have at their house. By having the students color in only the
healthy foods options on the sheet, and not the non-healthy foods, I’m helping them
identify what they should eat a lot of, like fruits and vegetables, and what they should
only eat sometimes, like ice cream and cake.
3. MyPlate Game
I chose to use this piece of multimedia because I felt it would be a good activity for the
students to sort foods into their correct food groups. Each student will have the chance
to play the game and match the foods to their correct spot on the plate. This game will
help the students develop matching and memory skills, by having them match the food
to the food group, and remembering what section is for what food group. This game
also gives the students the opportunity to remember what food they eat at home and
self-reflect on the food that they eat on the daily. The game achieves the learning goal
of the student by helping them figure out what foods belong to which groups in the
game. the design and layout of the game is perfect for this activity because the students
are able to work together to figure out where the foods belong on the plate. The game
will also help to motivate students to remember what foods belong to which groups. By
having the students create their own plate after playing the game, they will be able to
put knowledge to paper and show me what they’ve learned.
4. ABCYA.com game “Take a Trip: Food Groups”
I chose to use this piece of multimedia because I felt it was a good tool to help the
students learn things about each of the food groups. Each student on their own will get
the chance to play the game, by dragging the bug through the picnic and making him
reach is destination, the game states a fact about the food group you brought the ant
to. This game will help the students get a more well-rounded idea of the different food
groups. This game also gives the students the chance to work on their fine motor skills,
by dragging the ant through the obstacles of the picnic. The game achieves the learning
goal of the student by guiding them through the food groups, while also having them be
interactive with the game. The game will also be a great tool to help guide the students
in the right direction with their eating habits. By having the students play through the
levels of this game, the obstacles will get harder, which will become more engaging for
the students playing. This game’s purpose is to guide the students through the food
groups with facts, while keeping them engaged in the activity with the ant getting to his
destination.
5. Kahoot game
I chose this piece of multimedia because I felt it was a great tool to use to wrap up the
lesson we did in class. Each student will play as their own player on their iPad and will
compete against other students in the class in the game. Playing this game will help the
students wrap up the knowledge they obtained in the lesson and show off their new
learning skills. This game also gives the students the opportunity to show the other
students in the class how much they have learned during the lesson. This activity meets
the learning goals of the student by solidifying the information they learned at all the
different stations of rotation today. This game will also be a great tool to use to help
students solidify any other information from any other given lesson that we learn about
in class. By having the students play this game at the end of the rotations, the student
will be able to prove their knowledge and it will also give me the opportunity to see
what we still need to go over.
