 Carpentry may be designed as the process of making wooden
articles and components such as roofs, floors, partitions, doors
and windows. Carpentry involves cutting, shaping and
fastening wood and other materials together to produce a
finished product.
 Preparation of joints is one of the important operations in
wood work. Joinery denotes connecting the wooden parts
using different points such as lap joints, mortise and T- joints,
bridle joints, etc.
 There are various no. of tools that helps a person to work with
wood or timber. Lets read about some in detail:-
 HANDSAW: A saw which is used by
one hand for cutting wood. In
woodworking and carpentry, handsaws are
also known as Panel Saws. This is used to
cut pieces of the wood in different shapes.
Also available in different sizes.

 BACKSAW: A handsaw that is

stiffened by metal reinforcement along
the upper edge. These are normally
used in woodworking for precise
work, such as cutting dovetails, mitres,
or tenons in cabinetry and joinery.

 METAL SMOOTHING
PLANE: A hand plane is a tool for
shaping wood using muscle power to force
the cutting blade over the wooden surface.
These are used to flatten, reduce the
thickness of, and impart a smooth surface to
a rough piece of timber.
 RASP TOOL: A rasp is a
woodworking tool used for shaping
wood. Rasps generally cut more coarsely
than files. They are useful for rapidly
removing wood from curved surfaces.

 TRY SQUARE: An instrument

consisting of two pieces set at right
angles, used for testing the accuracy of
square work and for marking off right
angles.

 CLAW HAMMER: The hammer

contains a steel head and a handle made
from various different types of materials.
It is used primarily for pounding or
extracting nails from wood.
 SCREWDRIVER : It is one of the
important hand tools for different
woodworking project. It is used to drive or
loosen screw into the wood. A
woodworking screwdriver has some basic
parts like handle, shank, blade, and tip.

 BRACE AND BITS: Brace is a hand

tool used with a bit (drill bit or auger) to
drill holes, usually in wood. Pressure is
applied to the top and the tool is rotated
with a U-shaped grip. When in use, the
tang is gripped in adjustable jaws in the
shell, or chuck, of the brace.

 TAPE MEASURE: A tape measure or

measuring tape is a flexible ruler used to
measure size or distance. It consists of a
ribbon of cloth, plastic, fibre glass, or metal
strip with linear-measurement markings. It
is a common measuring tool.
 CHISELS: Chisel tools are used for cutting
or carving hard materials such as metal, stone
or wood. A chisel tool has a shaped cutting
edge of a blade on its end, with a handle that
is characteristically made of wood or metal. In
order to cut into a material – wood or metal –
a chisel tool is forced into the material.

 BREAST DRILL: A hand operated drill

with a pad on the end which can be place
against the chest to increase the force
applied. The drill operates through a wheel
and pinion gearing, so it is possible to have
a range of gearing.

 CLAMP: Clamps are versatile tools that

serve to temporarily hold work securely in
place. They are used for many applications
including carpentry, woodworking,
furniture making, welding, construction
and metal working.
